struts for 960 sedan

I would like to know when should I replace the front struts on my 160,000 mile 1996 960? I replaced the rear shocks around 140,000 with non-factory shocks. Although the volvo dealer says not to replace struts or shocks because they are not leaking and that they are in tact. I always believed that by 100,000 miles shocks and struts should be replaced. Any suggestions. What brand can be used instead of the expensive factory struts?

give ebay a try. I have gotten several parts I needed there. Bill
