On a hot day after driving around for an hour or so in stop start traffic my volvo v40 (98) will not take off smoothly after stopping. back fire and struggles to get moving again. once moving no problems. eventually stops altogether. Let the car cool down for a while and the problem goes away. Engine computer does not record any faults. Have had several techs look at it. replaced - plugs, coil packs, tested Ecu No luck ! All the basic checks and inspection seem OK Has anyone had similar issues and fixed them ? Suspecting fuel pump or system but not sure.
In cooler weather - No problems.
V40 stalls in the heat

what about air intake, sounds like a similar problem to a badly fitted induction kit, check to see if your filters blocked split pipes etc, may be sucking in hot air??

Thanks, I will check it out. it could be something simple. I am not a motor mech. What exactly is the induction kit ?.

its unlikely that youve got an induction kit, unless u bought the car of some speed freek, an induction kit is an after market performance upgrade, which replaces the standart "box" air filter and is designed to increase air flow into the engine.
but if done incorrectly tends to draw up hot air from the engine when the car is sat still which is bad, ie engines need cold air to get sufficient expansion in the cylinders.
if youve still got the big black air filter box on the nearside of the engine & not a red cone shaped filter then you dont have an induction kit.
there a pic of one here

anyway, what i meant was for you to check to see if there are any cracks or splits in your air inlet, so visually check all the big meaty wide hoses from the filter to the inlet manifold and the ducting that actually feeds the airfilter box itself
in a nutshell, your engine COULD be drawing air from around the engine bay rather than from the outside

Thank you Alfonz,
No, i just have the plain ol black box filter, No induction kit for sure.
Will have a poke around in the air inlet path and see if there is anthing sus! your explaination does make sense. The car does this caper every summer for the past 3 years and techs have cost time and money without finding anything! being intermittent makes it difficult for a workshop to reproduce the fault. javascript:emoticon(':?')
