Reading ECU Codes Post 1996

Post by moomac »

I see it is easy to read the codes on a pre 1996 850 but how can you do it on a post 96 car.

The ECU code reading socket is just below the front ash tray & you need a reader to plug into it.

Does this mean I have to visit the main dealer evreytime I want to read the codes ?? that is a very costly option.

All cars '96 and up in the U.S. are OBD II (federal law). You have to have a code reader to pull the fault codes. A basic model that will also turn off the check engine light costs about $100-$150. There is also software for your laptop available.

Lastly, PepBoys, AutoZone, and other parts/service stores will usually read them for free in the hopes you will chose to let them fix it or at least sell you a part.
