240 with a VW engine?

I recently bought a 1983 Volvo 240 GL diesel. When I looked under the hood, I was surprised to find that the engine block was stamped with the VW symbol....I believe on the block and on the valve cover.
My question is this....did Volvo have some help on their engines from VW, or do you think that someone changed out the engine on my new (old) Volvo?

Volvo was using diesels from VW. The VW-diesel in those days was very good. The first origin Volvo diesel was released in 2001.
