Not a bad idea. So, I just called an indie in the area that reportedly has the Volvo licensing agreement. I was there once and the rates posted on the wall were virtually identical to the dealership, if I recall correctly. But it can't hurt to ask.

I guess I mis-stated what the service guy said. He did not actually say they will be charging me $1000. The guy was too polite to say that I was an idiot and ruined two fobs but that is what he thinks. If they are bad, the charge is $500 per fob.
