I have no doubt the T6/T8 models will keep service departments of Volvo dealerships across the US VERY busy.

But they NAILED the new design language. They look so great.

I believe the FPR is just inside the right axle on a 98. Follow fuel lines and you'll find it easily.

The thing in between cyls 2 & 3 on the fuel rail on a 1998 is a dampener to smooth out injector pulses.

Disconnect the vacuum hose at the fuel pressure regulator. You don't have fuel shooting out of there do you? 1. I seriously doubt the baro sensor has ANYTHING to do with it. That's something you pick up just to make the CEL go away once the car's running properly. It's idling rather like my car did when the MAF was giving off weird readings, though. I kinda doubt the TPS is doing it either. On a 98, it should...

Investigate the EVAP system. Purge valve or cracked return lines.

The purge valve on my 98 is on the radiator shroud, with a thick line heading towards the canister at the rear of the car.

Some 850's have the EVAP canister tucked inside the left fender. Likely source of fuel vapors.

Could be the cable to the fuse box. It's happened before, it might be happening again.

The atmospheric sensor on a 98 is right in front of the fill hole for the windshield washer fluid tank. It does next to nothing on a 98.

Unplug it and leave it unplugged and see if the car acts up.

Leave the cap off; refill when the thermostat opens. Put the cap on and drive around the neighborhood. It may empty the reservoir again.

After ~2 fill-ups, you should be fine. Keep an eye on the coolant level (and possibly a jug in the car) for a week or so as it works the air bubbles out.

One question - is it possible the system just had enough air after changing radiator hoses that it needed to be topped up 2 or 3 times?? Re-filling ~2 times seems about right from what I recall. . I've never been confident in reading the level accurately since it varies so much with temperature - p...

Check resistance on the battery to fusebox cable itself. Those have been known to develop internal resistance and restrict power to electrical accessories in car once it begins to heat itself up under load.

Yup, it's moreso the winter driving conditions than the fuel blend. This feature is called "afterblow". It runs the cabin fan to dry out the evaporator fins so that you don't build up mold, mildew, and other smelly junk on there. It also helps to keep the evaporator core from rotting out, like lots of Volvos are known for.

Re: 98 v70 AWD front wheel whining

CVs usually clunk or wobble on acceleration. Hubs usually make a low drone like a prop plane or sort of a whap-whap noise.

Definitely road speed related, or could it be engine speed related? Transmission itself is on the drivers side...so something in the belt path?

(Steering wheel when going straight is turned maybe 7 degrees to the left.) Would an alignment perhaps correct this noise? Yes, I think you should revisit an alignment. Re: Popping from manifold after PCV change

Vacuum in the PCV system comes from 2 different places in turbocharged engines. At idle, it's coming from that tiny vacuum line on the side of the intake manifold. When revved up, it's coming from the intake side of the turbocharger. That's why I suggested giving it a quick rev to see if the smoke u...

Give it a quick rev by tugging on the throttle cable and see if it still smokes at a higher RPM. If the smoke up the dipstick disappears and glove deflates, your PCV system is good to go.

My car has eaten several MAF sensors. I think it's on #3 now.

Feel free to remove the clip and keep it as a souvenir - it just gets in the way. There are probably torque values somewhere, but "good and tight", will do - don't Hulk Hogan them down. I would check to make sure it is reseated firmly against the gasket. The lower screws need only be loosened - the manifold slots in on top of them, and then the top ones are inserted. Yes, his test should still work. There's a vacuum line to the FPR right between the 2nd and 3rd (or is it 1-2?) cylinders on the fuel rail. Try disconnecting the EVAP purge valve line to the intake manifold. Tape it off at both ends so fuel vapors or a vacuum leak don't exist. Try a few hot starts. I had a bad one that was flooding the intake at hot starts with fuel vapors. Beyond that, I would test resistance on the coolant temp sensor...

It shouldn't ping with the current thermostat - it didn't when new. I doubt it is a coil pack either honestly. Ping is a result of pre ignition due to low grade fuel, improper timing, or heat ("hot spots" or wrong heat range spark plugs").

Look for a clogged vent port @ the evap canister. Some 98s have the canister at the back; some have it tucked inside the front wheel well.

This will create a restriction in the EVAP system that does not allow pressure out as gas goes in, so the fuel backs up the pipe and shuts the pump off.

I think I would drop out the driveshaft to the rear wheels and take it for a drive.

Wheel balance that drastically off would be a huge issue at higher speeds. Wheel bearing should also make lots of noise at higher speeds as well (a loud drone or whap-whap noise at 40+).

Would the key ring antenna allow voltage to the solenoid wire and still not allow starter to crank if that were the culprit? That's one that you can eliminate...the starter will crank, the car will fire, and then shut itself off if that was an issue. Have you checked cable grounding & connections t...

The non-turbos use a Denso O2 sensor (Volvo rebrands it and marks it up); part number 9202309. I would stick to Denso; these cars tend to not like cheap aftermarket sensors. Welcome to MVS. Yes, those codes are for the front sensor. Replace the O2 sensor, clear the codes, and go from there. This idle dip symptom is indicative of a vacuum leak or mass airflow/O2 sensor discrepancy on the non-ETM cars. The low pressure AC sensor is on the passenger side near the base of t...

Never! 230K.

Cooling system maintenance is essential - overheating due to a blown hose or something is the #1 cause of head gasket failure on these motors.

Wondering if it's overboosting and cutting power.

How are your vacuum lines at the turbo and turbo control valve on the airbox?

When's the last time you changed spark plugs? I saw blow-out at 5K on a set of old spark plugs - power delivery and upshifts were very rough.

The Volvo diagram shows clamps on the bottom "hose", but I thought this is just an adapter that gets wedged between the trap and block. Is it just a mistake on the diagram? The original system came with a short little bit of hose there. Every replacement kit I have seen has had that little "adapter...

Lee, wouldn't it be a 97-98 GLT or XC head? Will the B5234T head fit the B5254T? The head itself is all the same, even with the N/A cars, but the exhaust valves on the turbos are the sodium filled valves and are different. The LPT and the HPT have the same valves though. ...Lee Good to know. Thanks!

This sounds like a bad MAF issue to me. If this is a non-turbo, check the accordion air hose to the throttle body for cracks underneath - sometimes they'll bust a hole right in the middle of them.
