The common theme here is the driver side master switch panel, all the juice for the latching goes through that switch .

I had a similar issue with the door locks - it was dirty contacts in the master switch, but no problems with the fuel door or hatch release.
The only thing that comes to (my feeble) mind that they have in common, is where the wiring passes through the door/jamb.

I hate to reopen this, but I'm still struggling with this problem. I've put so much effort into this issue and am really getting frustrated. Things I've done:

* Checked wiring in door jamb (it's perfect)
* Ripped apart rear of car to look at hatch wires (again, perfect)
* Checked fuses and tested ...

As suggested, I would check the wiring at the driver's door connector where it leaves the connector to where it enters the door. At this age I have had to repair a few for wiring failures.
