1998 V70 Thermostat replacement
An above freezing day allowed me to attempt the replacement of the original thermostat which apparently was opening too soon. The back bolt stripped and necessitated my cutting a slot so that a hand-held impact tool with a screwdriver bit could be used. Success! Not only does the engine now heat up ...

Re: transmission fluid
A correction to my last posting on trans. fluid: I used Valoline Dexron VI in my 98 V70. Can I use this full synthetic in my son's 02 V70?

transmission fluid
Hi good people! Not long ago I changed out the transmission fluid on my son's 2002 V70 with about 100 k on it. Used the recommended 3309. Now, unfortunately, it clunks when shifting up into 2nd gear, usually after slowing down to turn a corner. It did not do this prior to the change. I am considerin...

Re: 1990 740gle drivability problems
Replaced the knock sensor, cleaned all the grounds; still the same problem - and yes, intake and exhaust gaskets were replaced. Any other suggestions? Anyone know where I can get an ignition control unit that will not cost more than the car is worth?

1990 740gle drivability problems
Thought I would try one more time: What would cause uneven running and wide variation in timing accompanied by a sudden drop of the tach needle - but only in the 1700 - 2200 rpm range? Hot or cold, it runs good above and below the aforementioned speed. Clearly the uneven running (surging/loping) is ...

Re: 1990 740gle drivability problems
Bill, thank you very much for responding to my inquiry. Alas, my problem is not as simple as a faulty crank pulley. I wish it was! That was one of the first things I checked. Furthermore, the timing was never changed. As I mentioned before, the engine runs very well at idle and up to about 1600 rpms...

Re: 1990 740gle drivability problems
I checked out the pulley when I replaced the belt by referencing the crankshaft key as well as No. 1 piston at TDC. Besides, if timing was way off I doubt if the engine would idle normally in addition to running well at higher rpms. It is just at that rather narrow range of between 1500 to 2500 when...
