What tires were you running? I had full tread separation on a Michelin Xas on Saab 96 V4 @ 70 mph. The steel belt was fully exposed. The tire still had 34 psi in it! Tires had around 60k on them with plenty of tread remaining. Nothing but Michelins since then for me.
