sounds like you have a problem with mass air sensor.

1. yes its your pump.
2. you have a vacuum leak under the dash and the defroster vents aren't opening. very common.
3. Buy as set of all weather tires (Michelin Proxis are very nice) and a decent set of chains and save yourself the trouble.

I had the exact same problem in my 91 245. I figured that it was the sending unit gasket that failed. Turns out that there is another vent line on the top of the sending unit. It should be capped by a rubber cap (use one that is oil/gas resistant). I found the old one had cracked and fallen off. Pre...
