Re: Speed sensitive vs standard steering rack?

I know I'm reviving an old thread but I just ordered a rack from RackDoctor ('04 V70 2.5T). I blew up the picture they have of their rack and it's identical to mine, including the small numbers. Keeping fingers crossed. I've already been sent the wrong rack by Cardone through Rock Auto and also sent...

Had something similar on a different car recently. The alternator had seized up. Have someone check when you try to start the car that the alternator is spinning with the belt. If not, this could be a fairly simple fix.

Needs Timimg Belt at those miles or was it done not long ago (interval is every 70k and water pump and tensioner at 140k)? Just curios as that could be a deal-breaker even as a gift if the giftee is without funds. Still, very generous of you!

I did this too on my son’s S60. Just be aware that those sitting in a junk yard for a long time can be brittle. I broke one trying to fit it and had to go back for another. I'm glad we're all on the same page. With my other Volvo's I started doing full fluid exchange (2 quarts out, 2 quarts in) from 80K miles and then every 50K miles. I do like the idea of a simple drain and fill though once a year.

Several transmission threads lately- what are your thoughts?

So, I've been a firm believer in my other volvos of a maintenance schedule of auto transmission drain and fills. I know Volvo says it's a closed system and not to touch it but that's wrong (in my opinion). What are other owners of the P1's opinions in regards to this?

Have you ever done a transmission fluid drain and fill?
It might be time and what you're getting is the early signs of the fluid losing it's ability to shift your gears properly.
This usually happens on these auto trans right before 100K.

Re: Engine air-filters:

Although I do not know the answer, you do not specify which car you have... Please list your model year, model and type ('04 S40 T5, etc.). A turbo car would make more of a difference depending on filter than a non-turbo car.

Actually it's completely different than an S80...that requires a breather box under the intake manifold and all related hoses to come loose and the inlets at the engine to be cleaned and most often those related hoses and breather box (or oil trap as some refer to it to be replaced. On the P1 platfo...

On older P80's I would clean that elbow out once a year. I had silicone hoses and if I didn't clean them eventually a good turbo boost would pop the hose off and I would lose all power and go into limp mode scaring me to death...the oil accumulation there is normal from condensation of gases.

Re: Timing cover

This makes no sense- cover split all the way up, a bad oil leak, etc., etc...now tensioners. To replace just the cover, no need to deal with any tensioner, belt, etc. But your issues run deeper. If you have a bad oil leak it's under that cover. You probably need cam seals. The crank is at the bottom...

Depends on how well kept it's been. There are 850's that if they were given to me I would have said No- costs more to get to stage-0 than the car is worth.

My son's 850 transmission was ruined because coolant got into his transmission through the radiator. A turbo radiator has oil, coolant and transmission fluid going through it...any one of these breaches and you have problems. How old is your radiator? That would be my guess if the other suggestions ...

Btw, it could be a bad connector to the sensor. I'm not sure what the current is supposed to be but you could probe the wires going to that sensor with a VOM meter to see what you get with key cranked to ignition (you'll have to have someone do this...while you probe it I would think.

I can't believe the PCV job is that simple... Thanks for the info! Yes, but the dealer is still going to charge you an arm and a leg. Be aware that with your VIN# they can check to see if it's under a recall and if it is, you're up for a free replacement including the labor. These were prone to lea...

Re: C70 - What to look for?

Actually, the PCV system is the entire section that the oil filter fits into...it unbolts and you just replace it...all the air/oil duct work is contained within it so it's very easy to deal with. That said, the glove test- IDK...usually the sign of the PCV going south in this car is a whining sound...

JimBee...there was the shredded part of the wire hanging down... there was absolutely nothing in the cabin to pull...I found most of the wire with sheath in the trunk. So, in front of the driver's front wheel was a frayed wire...I took a chance, grabbing it with some pliers and pulled and sure enoug...

Actually his mother's car...I asked if that was all they wanted for it, since I was able to start it. They told me that of course they would love more, but they advertised it at $300 so didn't feel right asking for more. Anyway, it has apparently been a nuisance for months sitting there with 5 or 6 ...

MIJ's new $300 S70

So a guy posted a sale of a '99 S70 (base) on our local FB. It was only 1.5 miles from my house so I went to see it. He said he thought the timing belt had broken. I would not start. I got there and quickly diagnosed the problem. 186K miles on her- 20K miles away from the next TB change- the belt is...

Especially if this is an auto transmission get the coolant return hose replaced just for safe keeping. There is no level indicator for the coolant system...the coolant leaks out on the highway and your engine is toast and approaching 100K miles is usually when the hose goes kaput. Speed missing is when you haven't driven 35mph yet- it comes up on all cars. You sure this isn't the service light and that just needs resetting (of course after you change your oil).

I'm not sure if this would help you but look near the bottom of this page: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... 70-for-400
If you need extra hands, I would try some type of rope around the radiator to hold it in place as you muscle it up.

Re: Second time in 1 year spark plugs fouled up.

Yes, the best plugs are the Volvo ones, but still they shouldn't be fouling. With the coil packs misfiring and plugs fouling I might guess that the PCV system hasn't been serviced and you might also have some valve stem seals leaking. It would be good to check these things. To change the valve stem ...

Before buying a new ABS module, I would get the DICE/VIDA and run it to see what the code really is. Sometimes the dealer takes us for what we don't know and the actual ABS module might not be the issue at all. After you do that, then you'll know more of what you might need or not need. The roof drain and tube leading the water away from the car and not into the car is a known problem with these cars and there's a fairly easy fix for that. If needed I can find the thread on that and post a link here- a great discussion and solution(s) over on Swedespeed.

Eibach or H&R. Since struts and shocks adjust to height no need in changing them, I wouldn't think unless you are wanting to go to coilovers. Try the splice but be ready to replace it. Either the crank sensor or cam sensor heavy wire has to be away from ignition wires when they are to close, the signal gets corrupted. That's why they are shielded.
