If you can't get the tape out and do decide to replace the unit, ebay has great prices on the factory tape decks. Prices for the CD units are a lot higher, but I've seen tape decks for 50 bucks or so.

Also, you might check ebay for a glove box locking mechanism. I think I've seen them on there.

You can have a leaky head gasket without oil and coolant mixing. Sometimes coolant will leak between 2 cylinders and be burned up by the exhaust. Okay, maybe this is too simple to be a fix, but can't most good exhaust/muffler shops fabricate custom fitting exhaust pieces? It seems logical that they could slightly bend the exhaust out of the way of the driveline.
