Classic call for a pick-and-pull replacement IMHO. A part that is used rarely, and is easily tested for function before you walk out, if you do some homework on the wiring of the motor beforehand. seems like a worthy solution short of the whole transmission mechanism. It was already making a clunk back and forth and it doesn't seem like a huge amount of travel but i hadn't thought it could really hurt the gears on the motor itself.
