Re: 1997/98 S90: Timing Belt - What to do when age exceeds wear?
Thanks erikv11, my belt arrived yesterday from RockAuto and I'm changing it out today. I was quite surprised that the Continental timing belt is made in Great Britain. On a side note, my first choice was a Gates belt that was on clearance but stupid California wouldn't allow it, grrr.

1997/98 S90: Timing Belt - What to do when age exceeds wear?
My wife's S90 has mostly been sitting these last few years. It has 113,354 miles on it and the timing belt, idler pulley, and tensioner were replaced back in August of 2015 with just 108,874 miles by my Volvo mechanic who has since retired. That's less than 4500 miles in 9 years. I'm debating whethe...

Re: 1998 V70 - Engine Runs Rough After Sitting (ECU replace, ent)
Boy, this was painful re-reading this stuff again. Yes, I suspect I could have still used my old ECU. The reason I say that is the new MAF sensor at the time became defective after just a year. OBD data showed abrupt air flow changes at idle. After replacing this with an old one, that problem went a...

Re: 98 v70 NA evap canister shut off valve
I have never gotten a P0171 code. So I don't understand your comment that if I plug the vacuum port and still get p0171 I know I have a different problem. I get p0455 and p0455 only. The first day or two several months ago when it started I got the code for a small leak a few times and then it swit...

Re: P0171, Getting Closer to the Problem - Nailed it, finally!
I finally found the culprit. It was the new Bosch MAF sensor I installed last September. This P0171 has been going on for 4 months but its been more persistent recently with the CEL coming on every other drive cycle. I replaced the new MAF with an old Bosch unit and my fuel trims are no longer swing...

Re: P0171, Getting Closer to the Problem
I smoked the evap and the intake yesterday. I found a small leak around the vacuum tree. Replaced the O-ring and the vacuum plugs which were also hard and loose but the P0171 returned even after plugging the purge valve. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. This car has 192k miles. I have one more t...

Re: P0171, Getting Closer to the Problem
I was at the VIDA site this morning. It looks familiar. I think I've downloaded some free wiring manuals from there long ago. Is registration required now to get any kind of info? I hooked up the purge valve for now. I tested the other vacuum devices, EGR, air box's hot air door and its check valve....

Re: P0171, Getting Closer to the Problem
Interesting. My Scanner reports purge valve as either open or shut, and I think VIDA does the same. Ive always noticed it shuts at idle, which makes sense, as you don't want excess unmetered air into the manifold at idle. Once the engine revs, it is less important. Why it would open at low frequenc...

Re: P0171, Getting Closer to the Problem
Purge_Valve_A39_A42.jpg Purge_Valve_A39_11B-5.jpg All tests were with the motor idling. What I didn't do was record the quiescent voltage to see where it's at when the signal is not pulsing. I have more logs to review from yesterday and today. Today I took a 30 mile trip and had the vacuum, short (...

P0171, Getting Closer to the Problem
This P0171 problem on Moriticia, 98 V70, has been plaguing me for months. Earlier this week, I replaced the PCV system and now no smoke is puffing out of the dip stick hole but the P0171 problem is still there. Replaced the O2 sensors yesterday and it's still no cigars. Finally I decided to monitor ...
