I redid my heads on my 1998 XC, and found out the block is cracked also. I just found a 2001XC that looks like it has bad heads (water in the engine oil), but only 88K miles on it. I am seriously thinking about switching my new remanufacter heads from my 1998. Will it work?

I'm towing it nose first. Will do on taking the prop shaft off. Thanks for the good advice.

Had the timing belt off to diagnose a cracked block ... I think I will put it back on, don't feel comfortable towing the car with it off, even with the prop shaft off.

It could be the seal beneath the big plastic nut that retains the fuel pump if fuel drips out even with the car off. That is, of course, an easy fix - once you get to it.

That's what I was thinking, or something in that general area anyway. I was just there installing a new fuel pump cartridge ...

I guess removing the prop shaft would be a good thing to do?

Also, I don't want the crank moving because I have the timing belt off. Should I put the timing belt back on just to be safe?

If I remember correctly (like I said it happened about 3 years ago) I made a trip to North Dakota in the winter and it was REALLY cold. It was shortly before the problems started occurring ... I drove it all the way back to South Texas though.

Bad kharma to say the least it had BOTH a blown head gasket and a cracked block.

I didn't order the stuff to redo the head until I had the head off to make sure it was the the gasket.

It was very obvious the head gasket blew out between the cylinder wall and the water jacket right by the timing ...

The car is in very good shape, no rust at all and the interior is still pretty good.

In addition to that I am very stubborn. Now I feel like I have am going to get the car running no matter what.

Yes, it's a turbo ... it's a 98 V70XC with 157,000 miles on it.

Does anyone have an idea of where could it be leaking so much by the water pump? Is there an oil line in the general vicinity?

I put in a new radiator/oil cooler right before the head gasket went bad three years ago. So even if the thermostat (which is new) was open I doubt that is the problem ...
