98 Volvo S70 Not starting, white smoke, popping

Hi everyone, Well the black bat pooped out on me the other day at Starbucks. Will start once a day, run for a few then out again. Noticed at idle the engine was revving up and down. Cleaned the MAF sensor, throttle body, checked the fuel relay and still no go, so I changed the fuel filter which was ...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

That does look cool, thanks again everyone. If I don't have to mess with the water pump right now, that's more than fine with me. Will keep an eye on any leaks from the water pump. Is it a bad idea to continue running the engine without the thermostat, being in the Texas heat the consensus I get is ...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

Sorry for the delay. Had to be out of town for work over the holiday weekend. I finally replaced the ECT yesterday and no more over heating problems. Cannot believe it was that simple- even though I had replaced it about 2 years ago, I was expecting the worst. I will take heed to all the advice of r...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

Oh and the fan is working great at idle for 10-15 minutes plus, but when I get it on the road is when it's boiling over. Could that perhaps be the ECT not functioning in drive properly? As I said replacing it today. How long would you guys recommend leaving running at idle before I get on the road a...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

Thank you guys for your help. I will post later today if the hoses heat up on their own after replacing ECT. I have been very cautious about letting it get into the red. The heater seems to start working quickly after starting the car, so does that mean the heater core is getting heated from the eng...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

To answer if I knew it was overheating by the temp gage alone, yes- it was boiling over and have been through a few expansion caps already. Replacing the ECT today, but yes looking back on the records of the car for the last 14 years, I think the water pump is the original and just hoping the ECT wi...

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

Yes, left cap off until heat cycle, fan started, plenty of coolant. That was a worry of mine originally, but was told the cooling system the air bleeds out rather quickly, but with multiple attempts to ensure there was no air in the system and it's still overheating.

Re: 1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

Thanks for your responses! The cooling fan is working. I haven't checked the temperature at which it engages. Just bought an OBDII a few weeks ago, but haven't quite mastered it. PVC seems to be fine, but can't really run it long enough before overheating to be sure. Funny enough, I just went to Aut...

1998 Volvo S70 How to check water pump without pulling?

Hello all, well the car is still overheating, I've replaced thermostat, radiator, heater core, and combustion gas test (negative) and was wondering if there is a way to check the water pump without pulling it? Also, noticed the purple hose to the check air valve(which I think is the original) was pr...
