The wheels have found a new home with an employee of the local Volvo dealership on the north side of Indianapolis. They were priced-to-sell, because I am in the process of moving to another state.

Set of four 17 inch Volans from 1997 850-R.
Three are slightly under excellent condition. One is in above average condition.
Buyer must pick-up.

As I was getting onto the highway and rpms approached 3-3,500 and the turbo gauge entered the "white zone" the engine started hesitating and black smoke poured from my tailpipe.

Black smoke equals running very rich (too much fuel for amount of air ingested).

Are you sure you installed a 92C t-stat? Volvo OEM is 90C (roughly 195F). Personally, I run a Wahler 87C/190F in my own car.

Am I correct that the turbochargers are generally reliable parts with a long life? i.e. Is purchasing one used for $300 going to be a sound investment?

$300 sounds high to me -- I guess that it depends upon mileage and condition.

I flash the my 95 850 turbo transmission fluid with mobil 3309,but somebody said I should use regular dexon iii instead of mobil 3309,is it truth,I am scared to damage my trandmission

Run a search on "3309" on this forum. You will learn something like Mobil ...

I would ask your trusted mechanic for several years to remove the plastic tube between air filter box and turbo inlet. Examine inside of the turbo inlet for puddles of oil. Use your thumb and forefinger to check turbo shaft for sloppiness -- about 1/16" - 1/8" is normal. It wouldn't hurt to check ...

In one specific instance...

Just before filling the gas tank with gas, I left the ignition key in the "ign" position (instead of the "off" position) just so my passenger could listen to the radio.

The needle on my gas gauge was reading incorrectly the rest of the evening. It didn't correct itself ...
