I had a similar noise, turned out to be a pulley in the timing belt area...caught it just in time. It was very hard to detect and had me looking all over as it "projected" the sound Would only happen around 20 miles an hour and went away after it would warm up.... something to consider......

It should like a bad wheel bearing to me. Stinks that you could not run with the car, that would have worked out the best. :-) Definitely not a wheel bearing - I've changed one a couple of months back: that's more of a low pitch groan that increases with speed. Hi folk, Strangest noise started today while driving along. A monotone, high pitched squeal in the front that cuts in at around 20 mph and drops away going down under 20 mph. Many thanks for the suggestions - I have another post in on this forum because of almost total loss of electrics in the drivers door - I had to break the plastic locking tab to the fuel cover to fuel up. So looks like while I sort that out I'll chain the dogs to the car o'nite - or get Mr baseball b...

Terrific site, I appreciate the many excellent contributions. I've waded through the topics and can't find any on the problem I'm having: 1997 V70 2.5 10v with 102k miles: I have been getting 31mpg highway/ 27 city.
