It turns out that on both cars it was the REAR driver side disk which had big corroded areas inside and outside. I suspect part of the problem may have been cheap metal-based pads. Next time I will buy the more expensive ceramic ones...

Thinking a little more about it, I realize why they would put the switch inthe latch. It is the only place where you can reliably detect if the latch is properly closed! And that signal is probably used for more than just to turn off the light.

NO, on the original axle. That is the usual failure mode: outer boot cracks, dirt gets in, outer CV joint goes bad and clicks.
