If engine compartment gets HOT, engine quits
2005 S80 In stop and go traffic in hot weather (80+F) engine will basically quit (Normal power not available") like a limp-home mode but the car will barely go 2-3 mph. Let it cool for 15 min, all is well again. Temp gauge stays right in the middle like always, cooling fan operates normally. No...

Re: S60 Transmission back to its bad habits
I consulted two transmission specialists about my transmission, and they confirmed that though many manufacturers use the SAME transmission, 95% of the problems they see are when it's installed in a Volvo. They said that 75% of problems are heat related, and involve the solenoids. They suspect it's ...

Re: Any Harm using "W" Transmission rather than "D"?
I've read of ALL sorts of problems after disconnecting batteries in these cars with modules that no longer work (like climate control units that get permanently damaged). There must be a way of unplugging the computers w/o actually disconnecting the battery? I understood the MIL codes went away w/ b...

Re: Any Harm using "W" Transmission rather than "D"?
As you instructed me to do, I asked the dealer to: 1)Flush and fill the transmission. 2) Delete adaptions in the TCM 3) Check software to make sure the latest version was installed 4) Check/Replace B4 Solenoid Cover (My Trans serial # fell under the TSB for replacement) 5) Do a drive cycle The did 1...

Re: Any Harm using "W" Transmission rather than "D"?
OK, I guess it's a toss up whether the clunk destroys it first or the use of W.JRL wrote:Please don't.
It will prematurely destroy your tranny
It puts a HUGE strain on it, starting off in 3rd gear
Any idea why it NEVER clunks into first gear downshifts when using the manual mode?

Re: Getting Screwed I Think - S60, 2002 engine's got problem
It's strange that only a single valve in cylinder 3 is bent badly. If the timing were off, a valve in EACH cylinder on that cam should be bent (assuming the engine kept turning after the first valve was struck). How did they determine you had a bent valve? Compression check, or by noticing the vale ...

Any Harm using "W" Transmission rather than "D"?
When hot, my '01 S60 T5 often downshifts from 2nd to 1st with a "CLUNK" at about 3mph. If I select manual on the geartronic, the transmission NEVER clunks on that downshift (I manually upshift, but allow the transmission to downshift by itself in the "manual mode"), even when hot...

Re: volvo S60 transmission problem
I recently had my dealer (a LARGE Dallas dealer) do a flush-and-fill on my '01 S60 T5 and they used synthetic fluid-NOT 3309. They said synthetic is better in hot climates like here in Texas. I know my transmission shifts BEAUTIFULLY when cold in hot weather, and always in cool weather. It is when H...

Re: Front Strut Bushings? S60
Where do you live? What kinds of roads are you driving on? Do you make a habit of hitting potholes? Smacking into one good pothole can break any one of those parts, just like that! I live near Dallas, drive conservatively, and actively drive to miss any bumps or debris in the road. I am a retired a...

Wow. I didn't realize they go in 30k miles, which is how old mine are.
Two etms in 106k, two transmissions in 106k, 3 sets of motor mounts in 106k, frt axles and hub bearings shot in 100k.
There are definitely not your fathers 240 series Volvos!
