Perhaps other factors are engine size (e.g. 2.4) and turbo/non-turbo. Not sure about these.

I'm sure the transmission cooler will do no harm and maybe help slightly.

I found replacing the solenoids to solved the same problem. Not difficult, probably takes 3 - 4 hours. Once done the funny shifting dissappeared altogether. I would put my effort into that.
