Re: 2001 2002 5-speed automatic transmission & problems - start here Topic is solved

Is this reason enough to avoid MY01/02 cars altogether? I'm looking at picking up another Volvo after about 6 years without my 850, and looking at some newer models. Is this stop neutral thing something I can feel while test driving a car to be able to tell whether it has had the programming updated...

parts compatibility between 850 and 940/960?

Just blew the bottom end in my 850 this morning on the way to work, and looking at all options now one of which is to dump the 850 and move into a 960 (or perhaps a 940 assuming a good enough deal). Main reason for going RWD is that I want a chassis to do a big power project some time in the future ...

Big difference in the way the two types of sensors operate - the zirconia produces a small voltage that changes with differing oxygen concetrations, whereas the titania changes resistance.

Simple answer - you don't have one. Lots of these earlier cars didn't come with one standard, thus you also need the retainer - http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/4795/nm/Volvo+850+Cabin+Filter+Retainer+%281993-1996%29 Or, visit your local pick-a-part, and start pulling up cowls until ...

Just as general experience, I've found that outside of building a dedicated race car, a "high mile car on it's last legs" is rarely worth the effort, as you'll be swapping EVERYTHING from your car into it, and that's a lot more labor than most people realize. That said, if you're up for it, it does ...

No, its not strong enough to pull a fiberglass boat, it would be nice but the weight is too much on the rear axle, and also when you are retrieving your boat your car could get pulled back in with the extra weight. There are no pullers for the cam shaft pulleys, nor do you even need one. You remove the 3 bolts holding the pulley on, and it will more or less just fall off (mine needed a slight tap from my palm). No, that was from when I was doing a head gasket replacement with the engine still in the car (and after having done it once before, I think if I ever need to replace a head gasket again in one of these cars, the engine is coming out). I pulled the cams out of the upper head to facilitate a good scr...

where to install sender for aftermarket temp gauge?

After learning that the factory temp gauge in my 850 is attenuated, I'd really like to get an aftermarket in there as well that will indicate true temps. Problem is - where do I put the sender? I hate to put a tee fitting in the factory spot, as that will pull both senders out of active coolant flow...

My car started having boil over issues shortly after replacing the head gasket, despite the temp gauge showing a normal reading right smack in the middle of the gauge, and I thought for sure I had a cracked head or block (and of course was freaking the frick out at that point, lol). That was the wild part - it idled, and ran/drove fine, just didn't have the oomph that you would expect, nor did the turbo really hit like it should have - was much more smooth getting into the boost, almost like a warmed over N/A car.

Did a head gasket replacement on my 850 turbo a few months ago, and rather than using the cam alignment tool (or making one), I thought I'd be able to eye ball it "close enough". Car ran fine after, but never really felt "right", and never boosted as high as I felt it should, although I also never g...
