sorted. i replaced the anti roll bar links (short bar with the 2 ball joints). the ones supplied had a flat on the shaft to put a spanner on to stop the ball rotating when tightening the nut. i used this but did not realise that i had tightened the nut up to the spanner - one extra turn stopped the ...

i have now checked the engine mounts and they seem fine, the knocking does not occur on hard acceleration or deceleration. anyone got any other ideas - i have not replaced the etrut top mounts could this be a problem.
