Turbo 96 is Motronic 4.3, not 4.4. 97 850 GLT with the low pressure turbo engine was the first turbo 4.4 with the 98 high pressure turbo versions getting 4.4 in 1998. Temp sensor for ambient temp and the harness for it is not tucked behind like it should be. push the harmess with the corrugated wrap on it up and behind.

Check to be sure the two knocks sensor connector is plugged in. It leads down and plugs into connector on the plastic harness enclosure that is in turned attached to subframe. on that xc90 there are two like the item you found states. The one on RH mirror is the one making the cluster temp go whacko usually. In some cases it is the DIM (instrument cluster module)

Check that recirc is working. On a 101 day the vent temp should get in low 50s within a few minutes of window up, high idle, recirc on. It will usually get to upper 40s on 100F days even in the swamp after the vehicle interior cools. Volvo test spec for those temps is fan speed about 3/4 of full spe...

Tell us what it does with engine at 1200 or a little higher. Volvo and others give vent temps with engine speed increased above idle. On some I have worked on for being offline in the display the info and ID numbers would display. AT least that means it is not a power supply problem. Antenna issues will allow selection but no reception like when you are in a parking garage or tunnel.

You should count 4 or 5 gear changes, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4 tq conv lock or 3 tq conv lock as 5th change. If Tq converter is locked and you depress brake pedal with left foot while keeping right foot applying throttle and you see tach go up 300 to 500 rpm then you know TC is locking.
