I had the same issue w/ my 2001 S60.

The whole rear axle assembly has to be dropped and lowered to gain access. I had a split hose, probably $4.00 worth of parts and almost $300.00 in labor to gain access and replace the hose.

It sucks but had to be done.

UPDATE:

Finally found a used transmission out of a donor V70 and hot damn it's working again.

Took a full year to find the transmission and have it swapped out.

Car runs/drives well for now.

Car is for sale.

The dealers won't rebuild those trannies, it's a replacement with a remanufactured unit. Your old one will be sent back for rebuild and later installation into someone elses' car. Common answer from someone who bought a used 2001 and did not do their homework! It has been stated almost everywhere since about 2006 that 2001 Volvos are/were, for the most part, total crap.
