Try driving it with gear selector in 3rd and see what happens. It won't fix anything but you may be able to narrow the search.

I am not sure about the quality of one over the other but one thing I will say is replace both gears together. I had occasion to change one that was stripped on mine. Thinking I would save money and only change one I put it all back together only to have the other gear strip in less than a mile :x ....
