Thanks, guys, for this back and forth. I have/had a similar problem on my 1989 740 GL: sometimes (esp. when hot), when I turned the ignition key to "start", I would hear a "click" -- but not a solenoid "click" -- that sounded like it was coming from the relay box behind...
