The breaf "gurgling " noise was the fuel pump, so it might be ok. Do you have spark at one of the spark plug wires when the engine is cranked, caution if you get hit by the spark it can hurt. Does the engine crank at normal speed or faster than normal? This would be with a healthy battery...

Yes, I removed the top part of the timing belt cover and looked inside. The belt is intact and pulling at it, it felt that it was under good tension. What else comes to mind?

Jersey240: I removed the 3 bolts holding the top part of the timing belt cover in place, and peeked inside. The timing belt definitely looks intact, and when I pulled at it, it felt like it had good tension holding it in place. Other possible causes?
