Thanks all for your help. For the completion of this thread I thought I should report that was the ball bearing that needed replacing (as suggested by fazool), a far simpler job than full suspension work. At least now we know what these symptoms might be.

thanks for your info. I'm trying to get quotes on replacing the front suspension, but they're all impossible to get actual figures from. Anyway, I'll get it in to a Volvo mechanic first and at least get a status reportl
