Oil passages delivering oil to the tappets. Check your cover and you will see how they are matching with the oil canals there. Make sure that you spray compressed air in each hole to ensure there is no obstruction to the oil flow. The are very important holes. Your pic is bringing some memories back...

Hello there and do not worry. Just make it smooth and even with fine sand paper and you are good to go. This is nothing. Use regular gasket from Volvo or Victor R.
One more thing - do not ever put RTV on the intake or exhaust. It`s very bad idea. Intake could suck some pieces.
