I've experienced something similar. It turned out that the braided earth cable at the starter had broken, mainly due to corrosin and subsequently burned through because of the high current, which runs through it. Consequently nothing happened when thr key was turned. It just can't be replaced unless...

I have had that problem with peeling roof strips as well.
I simply got them replaced.
Don't think painting them is a good idea.
