Re: Opinions wanted regarding valve job on 1997 850 NA
And the bolt in that hole directly behind it came out a bit hard, so we stuck a good one in there as a reminder to check the threads carefully in that hole.

Re: Opinions wanted regarding valve job on 1997 850 NA
It's sticking about 1.5cm above the block. I'd be slightly worried that any kind of turning with a welded nut or vice grips might cause it to break again further down. But maybe if it's heated?
It did come up a wee bit before breaking, maybe 3 turns or so, with a lot of effort.

Re: Opinions wanted regarding valve job on 1997 850 NA
Thanks. I do have the compression numbers—it was a while ago that I did all the compression tests, but they were consistently around 190-200 except #3 which was like 60. The other big issue now is that one of the head bolts broke off, and is stuck in the block. I'm calling around but have yet to fin...

Re: 1997 850 wagon, 5speed, Brattleboro VT - needs work
So, I've decided to keep the car after all, and am just getting started on a valve job. Just couldn't give it up
Sorry for not responding before!

Opinions wanted regarding valve job on 1997 850 NA
Hi all, I have a 1997 850 NA, 276k miles. Has had a burnt valve and was running on 4 cylinders since last fall. So, finally got a chance and someone to help me work on it, and we got the head off. My big question is, what all would you get replaced as far as the valves? One of exhaust valves on #3 h...

1997 850 wagon, 5speed, Brattleboro VT - needs work
Hi all, I'm going to sell my 850, since it needs work and I just don't have time to deal with it right now. 1997 Volvo 850 wagon 5-speed manual trans 272,000 miles no significant rust (was a southern car half it's life) many new parts over the last few years: - fuel pump, alternator, radiator, brake...

Re: 1997 850 with misfire, low compression - advice?
Good to know. It was pretty similar weather out both times, sunny, dry, upper 30s or low 40s°F. Also, I did do a dry test on a couple of the cylinders the second time before putting the oil in—I think no. 1, which was similar to the first test, and 3 of course, which was basically the same dry and w...

Re: 1997 850 with misfire, low compression - advice?
Would there be any reason to think it would burn less oil with thicker oil? I would be going south, potentially hot weather.

Re: 1997 850 with misfire, low compression - advice?
Thanks for the reassuring note :-) Definitely won't push the speed. I've got the injector unplugged, so theoretically there isn't gas getting into the cat at all now, right? And during the few months before I knew what was going on and drove it with the injector still on, the oil level seemed to con...

Re: 1997 850 with misfire, low compression - advice?
Hi all, The car continues to run as is, and I'm wondering if I should worry about taking in on a longish trip, like 4000mi. Isn't the nicest to drive, but this trip would be mostly all highway and not many big hills. What do you think? is it risky? I might not have any other good options at the mome...
