Often batteries have a vent hole on both sides of the battery. There should be a cap on the side away from the vent hose to avoid vent fumes leaking.

Perhaps Volvo made its throttle module error detection less sensitive in order to get more life out of the module for their owners. However this may result in loss of detection of failing units. May be why you are not seeing a throttle failure CEL.

The car will report a bulb issue if it tries to turn on a bulb and does not see the expected power level into the bulb circuit. This is usually caused by a burned out bulb, or less often a bad wire. You should be able to detach each of the vacuum lines in turn, and check the vacuum on them with a vacuum gauge borrowed from an auto parts store. Re: Throttle body cleaning issues EPIC Volvo saga...RESOLVED!!

I suspect the main cause was a bad battery. Even if the engine was not running optimally, the alternator should keep it healthily charged but it had to be replaced.

Once it was replaced other issues had already arisen - out of gas, and damaged starter.

When you pump out the old fluid, it is important to keep adding new fluid on the intake side - drain some out of the return hose, but top up into the reservoir, so the level never goes below low. Re: ATF flush and pre-additives?

The term flush is not a good one. The basic options are to: - Drain about half the ATF via the ATF drain plug, and then fill back with an equal amount of new fluid into the ATF dipstick hole. (Half as fluid remains in the torque converter and other parts of the transmission.) - Run the engine to pum...

If the throttle was involved, I would expect a code for it, so probably not your issue.

If the exhaust is blocked then the car won't run.

So you still have the issue but no check engine light or stored codes?

If there is a bad solder joint with a slight gap, then heat can cause the parts to expand into good contact.

And as you point out some components are heat sensitive and will fail if overheated. Such failures are not usually self-repairing, but some could be.

Re: AC compressor not running

Check for diagnostic codes via the ODB2 port (VIDA or Torque app), or ask a for a test at an auto parts store. Get a coolant kit (can of A/C coolant with a pressure gauge) from an auto parts store. Check the pressure in your system. You check the low pressure side: http://acprocold.com/blog/car-tips...

FYI, You get good access to the passenger bulbs if you remove the top then sides of the engine and AT computer module protective box. there are 3 or 4 releases near the base of the box.

(And I do have the module release tool.)

But I do consider the module release tool to be very useful anyway.

There is more than enough gunk in there to account for the throttle plate to jam or stick. I am certain that you could clean it and I would expect the throttle body to work fine after that. Re: Fuel injector, broken "washer" on manifold end?

So about 'pintle caps'. On some injectors, there is a pin that projects out of the end of the injector (manifold side). There is a plastic piece shaped like a top hat (with a hole in the middle for the pintle pin to project through). That is appropriately called a pintle cap. On our Bosch injectors,...

Even if you restore both O2 sensors, as abscate mentions, it will throw a code. The rear O2 sensor is used to determine cat efficiency. When the rear O2 signal matches the front O2 signal, then the cat is considered failed, as will be in your case with no cat. So you will get a check engine light.

Re: 2002 volvo v70 turbo boost pressure sensor 9125462

When I replaced my throttle body on my 2006 S60 last weekend, I could not remove the intercooler to ETM pipe, as the clamp bolt access was blocked by a sheet of metal at the intercooler end. I just don't seem to have any crescent wrenches in my toolkit (which would have worked). But I moved the othe...

Re: recent brake job

As cn90 mentions, the parking brake shoes push against a surface of the rotor for the rears. If that surface is damaged and cannot be machined then it makes sense to replace the rotors. And then if the pads are in a poor condition, you would not want to damage the new rotors with bad pads so those g...

The parking brakes are known to lose their 'pads'. They can de-laminate from the shoes when they are older. Do you have to empty the tank to avoid spileage of gas when adding the fuel line (or does that go in the top)? Where would you put it if it is more than a few gallons?

I imagine a full tank would be quite heavy, but I have raised the whole car on a jack so maybe this is not a big deal.

Re: Electrical Gremlins Killing the Battery

Is this car new to you? Has the behavior changed recently? 1. Parking lights. If you leave the light switch in position 1 then the parking lights stay on after the ignition key is removed. (See below). Please check what happens to the parking lights, with the light switch in position 0, and then als...

Re: 06 V70 Low Beam outlet failure

Matt, yes, the headlight assembly ensures the bulb is aligned when you insert and rotate the bulb. Because of that, I was not paying attention when I inserted the bulb one time. Before the bulb was seated, I had it at an angle, and it pushed a cap that surrounds the front of the bulb. The cap appear...

Re: 06 V70 Low Beam outlet failure

Just wondering if your bulbs are touching the small reflector piece that surrounds the bulb. It is easy to bend it during replacement and then if it is out of position, and the bulb is in contact or close, it will conduct heat back to the bulb base. Take a look at the low beam from the outside of th...

Re: Inherited 2002 V70 X/c Topic is solved

You might also want to check the battery voltage (it should be about 12 and a half volts) and have it load tested. Charge it up, and then see if it continues to drop charge. I would not expect a problem in the turn switch to drain the battery after the key is removed. There are some circuits that ru...

The manual: http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2004/2004_V70/04v70_00.htm and the steering telescope adjustment - referred to as 'reach' http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2004/2004_V70/04v70_02b.htm#pg35 So adjust the lever down to free the steering wheel, and up to lock it. Re: 2001 V70XC - no start - what would trip the engine light?

Do you have Volvo Dice or an ELM unit that could be used with the Torque app? Either of these will let you measure the fuel pressure - it should be between 40 and 60 psi on start (I think). You might also be able to use a fuel pressure gauge and attach it to the Schrader. The ELM units are on Amazon...

I had a strong gas smell with my '06 S60. It turned out to be that the fuel line at the gas filter had rusted and was leaking. The filter is just in front of the passenger rear wheel on the under side of the car. It is bigger than a soft drink can. Picture in the link. While my leak was outside, I c...

I put in a new Bosch MAF a couple of weeks ago. I seemed to get better boost for a day or two, and then suddenly lost some power. An alternator puts out about 14.7 volts DC with a little ripple (variation). As it spins faster, it is able to supply more current. The battery acts as a reservoir to support power when the alternator is not doing so. The power drawn from the system includes the various parts of the electric system ...

The OP did a top end rebuild. The battery will have been disconnected. Going to the smog station shortly after would have found the emissions were not yet ready. In this case, it was nothing to do with a MIL code or light, just the result of clearing of the memory from no power. My transmission comp...

ELM adapter $12-15 from Amazon plugs into the ODB2 port under the dash. Hi G&K, Thank you! I thought the coolant line ATF exchange pushed all the old fluid out of the system, but you point out something critical. If the ATF sump is not drained first, the coolant line ATF change adds ATF via the ATF dipstick hole into the ATF sump where old and new ATF would mix. I think...

I still like the iPD ATF drain kit that allows you to run 12 quarts through the ATF cooling line. The ATF came out nice and red after 11 or so quarts. I did this at 60K and it is certainly time for me again (99K). Just have to pickup the ATF. https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4808/107945-automatic-tra...

Re: Greetings!! Also needing help with rough idle/limp mode!

It seems odd that the door problem started when the battery was replaced - it might be a computer module issue with the Drivers Door Module (DDM). But it could be that they slammed the door closed harder than you do. :) It seems likely that the other issues are caused by the battery being drained du...

I take back my comment about taping the PCV hose as a temporary fix. First, I suspect the hose will fall apart if moved. Secondly, you will need new clamps, and if getting those, find the replacement hose which can be installed without the removal of much more than the engine covers. Take a look at ...

Also I was uncertain about interior color codes and I need some door trim pins, and I can now check to see if mine is oak or beige.

PCV hose Good luck with the PCV tube replacement. I wonder if a temporary solution might be to use some high temperature tape and wrap the hose at the split. I don't think it is under very high pressure. On the other hand, I do like the idea of replacing it given its age. Wiring harness misaligned I...

I would not hose down the area under the engine covers. I don't like the idea of getting a lot of water there with the wiring, and so close to the timing belt. Mop up what oil you can then use electrical cleaners and wipe again. When the PCV system is clogged, pressure increases in parts of the engi...
