1. New relay from dealer is about $50 or so.

2. Repair the relay using cheap capacitors ($2-3 from Radio Shack).
Search for the DIY by "Ozark Lee".
I did read that very cool stuff, I will be doing the radio shack upgrade on a few relays

Re: 1997 V70 XC Hard Cold Start

I am sorry, I misphrased my sentence. It should read: - If you jump the 15-87 and car runs, fuel relay is bad. - If you jump the 15-87 and car does not run, fuel pump (or wiring to fuel pump) is bad. Sorry for the confusion! Ok thanks, that makes more sence. I will up date as the weather gets colde...

Re: 1997 V70 XC Hard Cold Start

Did you try the Fuel System Trouble-Shooting Guide I mentioned above? When you have hard starting, jump a wire between 15 and 87, if the problem goes away, then your fuel pump is bad. If not, then suspect fuel relay. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=52252 Ok so I did...

Re: 1997 V70 XC Hard Cold Start

well as I suspected, the ect was not the fix, It was 50* out and it still did the start then die, then try a few more times then it will stay running. Anyone have any more thoughts on this? it still seems like a fuel issue, I have not been able to check fuel pressure after it shuts off yet I'm new t...

Re: 1997 V70 XC Hard Cold Start

the ohms went to 2700 after install cold, not sure why? and that is still along way from 5000-7000 ohms that a previous poster said it should be.

I wont know in till it sits all night, to see if that fixed the problem.

I'm having my doubts that this was the fix.

So I bought a new ECT from volvo, And right out of the package it ohms 2100 OHMs, I will install it and check it again to see if this changes.

Going out to install it now...

Re: 1997 V70 XC Hard Cold Start

So I seem to be better at working on cars, than navigating around on computers.

I can't find where to buy the correct SWI ECT

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.

Re: 1997 V70 XC Hard Cold Start

so I VOM checked the ECT it was 4800 ohms, so out of spec I guess?

So then I just un-pluged it, and the car started right up, but of coarse then I got PO117, and fan running after shut down.

So what do y'all think?

Any links for the swf ECT?
