Re: No Backup Lights & PNP switch
Thanks, Lee. I had to put everything together and get the car back on the road, but decided to go ahead and test my known good switch. The blue wires (pins 9 & 4) did nothing as I slowly rotated the shaft on the switch. Extending your logic, I tested the Red pair and then the Green pair, also wi...

No Backup Lights & PNP switch
The backup lights stopped working a while ago, and I bought a new PNP switch but never replaced it because I was too lazy to tear it all down. I've got the area torn down now to fix other things and thought it would be a good time to do the PNP. After reading about the alignment and such, I was wond...

Re: wheel alignment
Excellent information, tryingbe! Are the part numbers mentioned Volvo numbers? Lots of good stuff to dig into. Thanks! Good to know it's not very difficult, MadeInJapan. Just a little concerned about the torque specs; 37 ft-lbs plus 150 degrees doesn't sound very specific to me. My torque wrenches d...

wheel alignment
Looking at my Haynes repair manual for my 97 850 wagon, it says the only wheel alignment adjustments are toe for both front and rear. Is that true? It seems like the front should have at least a camber adjustment, if not a caster setting as well. I have some edge wear problems (shoulder wear to be m...

Re: 97 850 ECU monitor reset
Thanks, folks... unfortunately, I live in Kalifornia, the only state allowed to supercede the EPA. I've decided to start by doing the Flywheel adaptation, then do the driving sequence. Never thought this would be this insane!

97 850 ECU monitor reset
After reading the almost insane requirements to reset the monitors on the computer to get smogged, can I jack up the drive wheels and follow all the procedures to set things right? How do they do it at a dealership where they can't always follow the exact procedures?

hahaha...
What a goofball I am. Turns out there were 2 places to hook up the control wire to the solenoid and I had it on the wrong one. Seems there is only one contact on the original Volvo starter, and there are 2 on the NAPA rebuilt. I chose the wrong one and didn't even see the other one at the bottom. So...

my next step
I'm going to try putting back the old one first. I guess I'll get it back in place without all the plumbing and see what happens.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

new starter DOA
Well, I replaced the intermittent starter motor (mentioned in a previous post) and the new starter doesn't do anything at all! ARGHH! Everything appears to be reconnected and yet nothing happens when the key is turned. I measured voltage at the big terminal with the 3 wires and it had a constant 12 ...

Thanks for your help. I found the PO172 section here and am working my way through it. So many hoses, so little time! I'm sure I'll have more Q's after reading through this. This car has been so good until the last 20k miles from 180. Is there a site with a diagram for the hoses on a n/a 850 as ther...
