Re: sheared subframe bolt '96 850
Here is a good YouTube video on bit sharpening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqPgdEThQzc It takes some practice to do it well. Good news is you have a very long bit that is all the same shape and you can try to sharpen many times until you get it right. Just try not to get the bit very hot (blui...

02s are not too pricey in CA, given how popular they are. Running beaters under 10k. I saw a very clean Touring listed for 14k recently, but it disappeared almost immediately. I think I'd rather pay 15k for a clean 02, which is around the going rate, than 10k for a clean E30. Not that I want to do e...

For me, The One That Got Away was a gray 84 318i coupe. Not the most desirable E30, but a fun little car that looked good and drove great. I bought an MR2 instead, fearing the quirks of an old European car as an inexperienced mechanic, and lost interest in the Toyota within a year. To its credit it ...

It's tough! You don't have to rotate the cams 360, just rotate them to be aligned with the cover notches. In fact you may not be able to rotate the cams 360 as a valve will probably boop a piston at some point. It looks like those notches weren't lined up to begin with so check the cam alignment bef...

If the marks on the cam gears and crank pulley line up with their counterparts on the belt cover and block respectively, you're ready to install the belt. You have to have everything lined up on install, but it shouldn't matter what you do before then, as long as the pistons aren't meeting the valve...

To upgrade to the new style oil cooler, the coolant pipe in the back of the engine would also need replacement. I don't think the pre-99 cars had tees for the oil cooler. Maybe an hour or two, plus lots of wrestling and cursing. Plus the two hoses which I think come out to like $50. But if you leave...

Soak the surface in some aircraft paint stripper and go ham with a plastic scraper. If you have to sand, stuff the openings with a few wet paper towels so you don't get any abrasives in the coolant passages.

I wanted to make that point because I think the case for the catch can is less obvious if you don't think the PCV system is unreliable. The PCV isn't too problematic if you change your oil regularly. If you can verify that [the passage between the baffle box and sump] and [the tube and nipple between the baffle box and intake] are both clear, a well-maintained car will not give you PCV issues. If it's been neglected, you may need to...

Re: turbo comp chart, core interchangeable? 16t vs 18t vs 19t Topic is solved
You can keep the turbine wheel and lil rusty middle nugget from the 16T. But you'll have to source a compressor wheel and cover for the 18T and those are not easy to find on their own. If you can find an 18T at all, it'll probably be a complete unit. By the time you buy a rebuild kit and get the thi...

Super unusual. I did a rocker replacement on my old Toyota. If you know how to weld it's not terrible, but if the rust goes deep there's a lot of fabrication involved. An underdamped rear will bounce around, but the rear shocks are easy enough to swap out that I'd stick with what you have and see how it feels before committing to a change. The turbo does not boost all the time. Most of the time the pressure in the intake manifold is less then atmospheric pressure. In short most of the time a turbo charged engine is naturally aspirated. That's a good point... just how much could that really be doing, anyway? It makes sense to bypass it, especially if you drive your car harder at least occasionally. We all hate that banjo bolt. It's the worst party of working on any piece of this car. Regularly costs me an hour to remove and another to replace. I bypassed the coolant loop. P80's have some of the smallest turning circles around. 10.2m kerb to kerb is better than most hatchbacks manage, and similar class cars like A4s is 11.6m and A6s are around 12.1m. Can't comment on the 850 chassis in particular, but generally, adding more anti-roll to one end of a car (independently of the other end) will tend to reduce grip, transferring load to the other end. Adding rear stiffness while leaving the front alone will increase the car's tendency to oversteer. T...

How are the calipers holding up?
Worth noting: the factory big brakes use the same calipers and pads as the standard items. Makes for an easy upgrade.

Wheel locks won't stop someone who really wants *your* wheels, but nobody's cruising the streets looking for wheels off a 20 year old Volvo. Theft of non-flashy wheels is theft of opportunity. There are a few online services that will 3D print or CNC parts at relatively reasonable prices based only on a CAD file and maybe a print if you have special requirements. A small spot will take a few minutes. Forgot to mention - wash and clay bar the area first so you're not grinding grit into the paint. When you're claying and sanding at the coarsest grit you should feel whatever you're rubbing on the surface become smooth once all the high spots are knocked down. T...

Getchu some sandpaper. A bit of high-grit paper (start at like 800 and work your way up to 2000) will chomp through those scratches, the buffer alone won't do it. Take it slow and be willing to repeat the cycle, and you won't eat through the clear coat.

What's your bulb situation? On older cars the signal flash rate is tied to current through the circuit. To expand on abscate's point: "M14" refers to a bolt that has a 14mm thread; the designation is independent of the head size. Volvo used lots of nonstandard fastener heads in these cars, so if you find one that'll fit the hole at a hardware store or similar, you may end up with a bolt that needs a d...

For what it's worth, I bought a set of seat covers from Lseat for my old E320 coupe and was displeased enough with the quality to return them. Per the Haynes manuals I have, the inner CV being a ball/cage vs a tripod is dependent on manual vs auto transmission on the S60 as well as the S70. The text is exactly the same in both manuals, though, so it may have just been copied over without any verification.

Update: yeah, just hammer it. Here's the circlip holding that CV joint together. It's entirely contained within the inner race of the outer CV joint, and there no access hole for it. Nothing to do but whack the race until the ring squishes in and let's the CV slide. It didn't take a ton of force. I ...

You need 16" wheels for this, and I'm also not sure all 16" wheels will fit. My Perfo wheels ('98+ T5 16" wheel) are so close to the caliper on the 302mm bracket that the ~1/16" thick stick-on wheel weight barely clears. I believe I've read that the big brakes don't fit under the older 16" wheels fr...

Dead thread revival - I'm baffled about this on my V70's axles. 99 T5 manual, which seems relevant because there are some changes between years, engines, and transmissions, though I seem to share most in common with erikv11's 850, which, if it's one of the ones in his signature, is an older NA car. ...

Maybe a better summary here. According to the IIHS, all else being equal, a bigger, heavier car is safer. I agree with that. The video's point is that "all else" is not at all equal between older and newer cars. A smaller, newer car is often safer than a larger, older car because of that "all else"....

Modern cars are dramatically safer than older cars. Much, much more so. Yep, a teaspoon or a half cap. Just enough to wet the perimeter of the piston rings. If you're pouring from the bottle directly into the cylinder, definitely too much.

How much oil did you put in? What were you doing when the smoke was coming out? From what you're saying, I'd guess that 300+ psi was the result of hydrolocking the gauge (petrolocking??), or at least dramatically reducing the volume of gas being compressed. If your other cylinders were reading diffe...

Seems to me if you're already going in there you might as well replace the gasket. It'll be minimal extra work, and you'll know the gasket in there is good, whereas if you just retorque you have no idea what that thing's been through.

Check the bolt holding the CV axle into each hub. You can get to it by removing the dust cap from the center of the wheel. These can work their way loose. A revised bolt from Volvo uses a squishy washer to keep everything tensioned up...i guess. Google "axle ping" for more info. It's a noted problem...

Could just be a leak. A leak will (a) put coolant on the ground if it's big enough, and (b) prevent pressure buildup in your coolant system, allowing it to boil.
