Re: Volvo newbie checking in with a couple issues.

I wanted to make that point because I think the case for the catch can is less obvious if you don't think the PCV system is unreliable. You could save $40 on parts, but you'd have to find a place to mount the catch can, empty it regularly, and subject yourself to the quality of your own engineering....

Re: Volvo newbie checking in with a couple issues.

The PCV isn't too problematic if you change your oil regularly. If you can verify that [the passage between the baffle box and sump] and [the tube and nipple between the baffle box and intake] are both clear, a well-maintained car will not give you PCV issues. If it's been neglected, you may need to...

Snagged C70 headlights from a junkyard for $75. I'm surprised they were still there - the interior was gone and a few of the headlight mounting bolts had been loosened. Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Congrats! Feels good, doesn't it. As others have mentioned, oil in the intake piping is no big deal. It's coming through the PCV system. Some of the oil vapor condenses after getting sucked into the intake, upstream of the turbo. Most makes it to the cylinders and is burned off, as is the system's i...

You can keep the turbine wheel and lil rusty middle nugget from the 16T. But you'll have to source a compressor wheel and cover for the 18T and those are not easy to find on their own. If you can find an 18T at all, it'll probably be a complete unit. By the time you buy a rebuild kit and get the thi...

That's a good point... just how much could that really be doing, anyway? It makes sense to bypass it, especially if you drive your car harder at least occasionally. We all hate that banjo bolt. It's the worst party of working on any piece of this car. Regularly costs me an hour to remove and another to replace. I bypassed the coolant loop. Can't comment on the 850 chassis in particular, but generally, adding more anti-roll to one end of a car (independently of the other end) will tend to reduce grip, transferring load to the other end. Adding rear stiffness while leaving the front alone will increase the car's tendency to oversteer. T...

Re: Oil - What weight do you use? (Please forgive me for asking...)

I'm not sure the controversy over what constitutes a "full synthetic" motor oil matters. Seems like a semantic distinction. The "group 3" synthetics are synthesized from crude oil; that the base from which they're made happens to be what comprises conventional oil seems pretty irrelevant to me. Ever...

The steering rack you used is the only variable. A cursory glance at a couple pics show that they *might* be able to mix them up, but they are not listed as interchangeable. The 93-00 P80 cars all use the same rack. The 01-04 cars use a different one. Yeah, this is what I'm worried about. I ordered...

What size hoses do you need for the 302mm upgrade? Looking to do it on my 850 soon - especially since my insurer doesn't classify it as a modification. People get away with the standard hoses. Getchu some sandpaper. A bit of high-grit paper (start at like 800 and work your way up to 2000) will chomp through those scratches, the buffer alone won't do it. Take it slow and be willing to repeat the cycle, and you won't eat through the clear coat.

Re: All Turn Signal lamps solid, not blinking 2000 V70

What's your bulb situation? On older cars the signal flash rate is tied to current through the circuit. The current heats up a spring-steel reed in the flasher, which "snaps" into a position that closes the circuit, sending lights to the bulb. The current through the bulb is lower and the Reed cools...

They're cheap and easy. I got some from eBay for a few bucks - o-rings are highly standardized parts made of very standard materials - and they've held up fine for five years so far. If you have any question about their condition, just do them.

Maybe a better summary here. According to the IIHS, all else being equal, a bigger, heavier car is safer. I agree with that. To phrase it using the language of the original question: in the power cycle, the first and second rotations of the crankshaft to which you refer are geometrically identical.

And a question - what's the bottom of the PCV channel in the oil pan supposed to look like? It's clogged on mine, so I've got it soaking in acetone. Where is it supposed to drain into the pan? At the bottom?

Or else you get this nightmare. Allegedly 121k on this '02 T5 motor. I have to wonder if the previous owner *ever* changed their oil. The bearings all feel fine but you bet I'm going to check compression as soon as I can.

To evaluate tie rod play, lift one side of the car at a time, so that the other is still sitting on the ground.

Re: Do You Really Use Torque Wrench?

If even application of force is necessary - head bolts, cam cover bolts, wheel bolts - then yes. Smaller screws going into aluminum is also a good use of a torque wrench, though for some things I've just gotten used to not going full gorilla on it (intake manifold, thermostat housing, etc).
