Just wanted to update you all that the problem has returned- usually only first thing in the a.m., and I believe you are right about the brake light switch. That is the next thing I will try to replace and see what happens.

My mechanic looked at the car and said it was the gearshift relay. She was able to use a used part, and it has solved some of the other problems I've noticed with the car, like hesitation when shifting into higher gears (especially when the ac is on). Thank you for your theories and ideas, though!

I must have worded my problem incorrectly, but I think you got what I meant. Yes, I mean the emergency release catch behind the brushes in the gearshift cover. 1992 240 gearshift won't work
My 240 will crank up, but when I try to put it into gear, the gearshift won't work. Tried to use the emergency button on the side of gearshift, but that wouldn't budge, either. Checked the fuses, and they looked fine. What gives? Anyone know?? Thanks for your help!
