Remove the fuel pump relay when the engine refuses to start. Insert a large paper clip into 15 and 87 slots. The fuel pump will run continuously with the key in the on position. Be careful, the paper clip will get HOT in a few minutes of engine on. If the car still won't start, it may then point you...

You could try cleaning the PnP contacts by 'rowing' the shifter from R to D about 20 times. Check the condition of the ATF, if it is not red, then a flush is in order. Or, just replace the PnP. The 'incorrect gear ratio' is bogus. BTW, when the up shift arrow is on and you are driving, shift to L wh...

I use a pair if dykes to cut the 4 hog clips at the bottom of the seat back. If you remove the cover under/in front of the windshield, you will be able to see the blower. You could reach down and see if it turns easily.

Otherwise remove the glovebox to gain access to the blower box and verify that the wires are not melted. Replacing the blower is not a difficult job.

I would suggest that your throttle body or idle control is quite dirty.

Use the diagnostic box under the hood, A-3, to find the code for the ABS. Try deleting it first and see if it comes back. It will require you to drive the car over 20mph before the ABS light gets reset. Probably a sensor.

I would place the MAF in serious consideration. A disconnected MAF is supposed to idle, and not be able to get around the block. You cannot run the engine without the PS pump in place, there would be no tensioner. If you also removed the AC compressor, still no way to tension the belt.

If all you want is to run the engine for diagnostics, take off the belt and run just on battery power?

Re: 1996 850 boost pressure into crankcase/ one way valve.

When under full boost, the intake manifold pressure is positive to 12psi, so the small PCV line from the cyl 1 area to the PTC should be positively charged. But the amount of air passing through the air intake to the turbo creates enough vacuum to draw air from the large line to the PCT that it will...

Fortunately, most of the coupes came with the high pressure turbo (T5). Unfortunately, very few are 5 speed with a clutch. Everything behind the firewall, except drivetrain, are unique to the C70. Seems that most of your driving is at low rpm. Try driving in 2nd around town, keeping the rpms above 2000, to clean off the valves. Besides, it makes for a lot of fun driving!

I am surprised that the CEL blinked, that usually only happens when more than one cylinder is misfiring.

No harm done, even when it gets 105F in the shade. The owner's manual has a graph with viscosity and temp. Just remember, back in 1997, 0W30 oil didn't exist and that is what is used in newer cars.

Re: Fitment questions, 94 and later 850 to 93 850?

What else would I need to port over to make the later ones work? How does wiring make a difference if the SIPS bags are mechanical? No wiring needed for 1994-1998. Total SIPS redesign for 1999-2000 and SIPS will not work in the 850s. While the 1993-1994 NA do not have seat air bags, the 1995+ will ...

Re: How to get oil out of Spark Plug Cylinders

It doesn't have to be squeaky clean. You can pull the spark plugs so long as there is less than an ounce or so of oil. The oil will go into the cyl and drain to the rings. Just give it 30 minutes or so to do so before starting the engine. Suggestion: Do not clean out the spark plug holes with the pl...

Usually, at that mileage, the valve seals are worn and allowing oil to pass through to the cylinders. Yes, replacing 20 valve seals requires removing the head, and that is not a small job. You might want to switch to a slightly 'thicker' oil. 10W30 or 20W40 will be just fine in your Southern climate.

No 'trick', just extra work. The air intake pipe to the turbo must be removed so you can get a pair of pliers on the spring clip holding the vacuum line to the turbo. I would first check that the MAF, ECT, IAC are actually plugged in. If I understand correctly, the mechanic installed a 1997-98 engine in your 1995 and did not replace the wiring harness. I don't know if the pins are in the same location between the LH Vs the M4.4.

The right side is the passenger side, the starter is left of center. If it is coming from the right side, check the lower engine mount. If it fails, the crank pulley could be touching the subframe.

A new head and water pump = $500 for DIY. $1500 for a mechanic in CT. Depending on the miles your car has, the S70 is probably worth about $1500, after repairs... Then there is the potential problem of the bevel gears on an 18 year old car.

Poor little mouse! After cleaning out the mess, which shouldn't be a lot, you could always check the timing marks. I assume the car hasn't run in a while, like a few weeks. The oil can completely drain out of the lifters at that point. As soon as oil pressure comes up to 'normal', the lifters will g...

The hard part is removing and replacing the VVT and sprocket. Replace both cam seals as the intake is also leaking. The exhaust cam "looks" clean but is likely washed with oil, get OE replacements.

Give the engine the 'glove' test first. A leaking RMS is expensive. While checking the rear cam seals, get under the car and check the turbo oil return line for leaks. Then check the oil cooler lines, both of them. If it is not leaking a lot, you could try Bars RMS sealer. For $7, it's worth a try, ...

Re: Is there a "pre heater" in the plastic air intake pipe?

There is a 'heater'. It is known as the PTC nipple. It is there to keep the oil vapors warm so they do not clog up the nipple. This nipple is not "replaceable", according to Volvo. It is part of the intake hose. Of course, us shade tree mechanics clean out the nipple as a matter of expediency and th...

Re: 1995 854T What can make a AMM/MAF Sensor go bad?

I checked my MAF connector on the 95 855T and it is quite secure, very little movement. The engine still has the plastic connector to hold the MAF wiring to the 'blue' vacuum line, creating a lot of stability. It also keeps the MAF wires away from the coil wire. Check the male connector leads, make ...

Same engine. The belts need to be replaced at 70K miles. Rollers, probably, for sure at 140K. Hydraulic tensioner 180-200K. Water pump at 180-200K.

Of course, if you don't drive much, 10 years is the max for a belt.

To old for a charge is a lie. The 850's were known for evaporator leaks, about 8-10 hours of labor to replace. But add dye, which does not evaporate or wash off with water. Check for a leak at the schrader valve where you add R134a, the rubber seal will eventually dry out. If you decide to R&R the e...

Normal. The vacuum used by the CC has its own pump and it takes a little bit to get enough vacuum to pull the throttle.

The motors seldom fail, but the position sensors can get out of alignment and cause the same error message as a failure. Mechanics/dealers don't like to work on the ECC system, very few know how to work the hand held computer for a proper diagnosis. With multiple errors, such as yours, it is best to...

Grooves in the rotors are usually caused by rocks getting caught in the pad, no big deal unless it is noisy. Someone could take the pads off and clean them and put the pads back on. Go ahead and pull the module off and clean out the TB throat, it needs it anyway. Clean the electrical plug with electric cleaner, NOT WD40. When putting it back together, make sure the plug is fastened securely.

A junk yard version with a yellow tag may require programming at the dealer to work.

Re: 95 850GLT Stick Shift Plastic Plate Keeps Lifting Upward

I think the person doing the writeup wanted to save the boot and replace the shift knob. If you are going to replace the boot, then cut away! But you might want to investigate the option of opening the sun roof and pulling the shift knob straight up - when it comes off, it comes off in a hurry! Usin...

Re: 95 850GLT Stick Shift Plastic Plate Keeps Lifting Upward

Finding a new shifter boot is not going to be easy. For Ebay, make sure you get a photo of the bottom as well as the top. Because it is the front two clips and the person broke them off forcing the boot off the wrong end, look under the console for the plastic bits and get some good glue. Let it cur...

Re: 95 850GLT Stick Shift Plastic Plate Keeps Lifting Upward

I just pulled mine up. You are missing the rear clips, or the front as your picture is a bit confusing. The two front clips have a 90 degree 'foot' that goes under the console plastic which keeps the boot in place. There are 4 plastic tabs, two on each side, that clip under the console plastic. Then...

Re: 95 850GLT Stick Shift Plastic Plate Keeps Lifting Upward

There are supposed to be 2 thick plastic tabs on the front, they would have been "L" shaped to keep the front from lifting up, and thse tabs fit under the top of the console. The sides have 2 plastic straight tabs on each side. The rear has none.

Re: 95 850GLT Haze on the Interior of the Windshield??

I use Windex, but that likes to streak. You can use any window cleaner you like. I wet a paper towl with the cleaner, then spray the glass, and wipe half of the windshield. Then I take a clean CLOTH, not paper towel, and wipe off the cleaner and dirt. Then I move to the passenger side and do it agai...

If you have an aftermarket thermostat, it doesn't work anymore. If it were my "R", I would rent a car.

Re: 97 volvo 850 wagon Error warning lights car idiling stra

If your mechanic were a 'shade tree' type, I could forgive him. But he sounds like he has never seen an engine before. Changing a crank position sensor is a simple task and he should have started the engine and noticed anything amiss. Oil on top of the engine? That can only come from the oil filler ...

Re: 97 volvo 850 wagon Error warning lights car idiling stra

Find a local autoparts store and have them read the error codes. Perhaps they can also find a loose wire. They will gladly check the alternator and battery in the hopes that you buy parts from them. Write down the voltage output from the alternator, it should be greater than 13.5V at idle (ideal is ...
