thanks
I'll try that out first, if the fluid change doesnt work, I'm still in the same situation im prepared to be in. The sound does go away when i shift to neutral, and it also goes away when i back off the gas pedal to about one inch of pressure, sound like a differential symptom?

Replace rear end?
Hello, I had a previous post working out some noise issues coming from my automatic 88 240 sedan. I got the driveshaft support bearing replaced, wich was contributing part of the noise, after the test drive we still had pretty much the same noise going on,and the mechanics diagnosed as the different...

hmm the rubber is definitely ripped off of half the bearing, and could the wire be the spring thats part of the bearing? its definitely about that size and looks like it was coiled like a spring previously. Rough drive shaft would give less power to the wheels correct? Car didnt seem like it wanted ...

oops it was dark out last night when i was checking the driveshaft. what I thought was the front u joint was where the driveshaft meets the center bearing. The driveshaft moves up and down by hand in the center bearing and there is some frayed/bundled up wire of some sort in there as well

yes thanks very much for the troubleshooting. It seems that the front u joint is definitely not holding the drive shaft securely, and forgive me for not being mechanically inclined, but whatever the front u joint connects to seems to have some sort of frayed wire

Ok hopefully this is all starting to add up. The driveshaft seems secure by the rear u joint, but loose at the front u joint. I had heard the whistle coming from beneath the emergency brake(wich is directly above the front u joint) but kinda ignored it stupidly. next thing I knew the crazy rumbling ...

Yes the sound seems to go away for a second when i let off the gas, and will also go away with the light pressure i mentioned applying to the gas , not even really enough pressure to accelerate. Ive also noticed a whistle coming from what seems to be under the emergency brake, not sure if that would...

Yes i check it while the car is warmed up, still running while on a level street. Today i noticed that the noise also disappears with a very light amount of pressure on the gas pedal, weird.

I havent actually changed the transmission fluid, but its had a slow leak over the last year and ive kept the fluid between the min and max markers on the dipstick, and the fluid has stayed a healthy red color. The problem didnt occur until my car sat unused for a couple months. Its hard to tell if i...

Its mileage is around 180k, the meter broke at 150k. Its an automatic. Today after closer listen it sounds more like a whirl/hum that speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car, the thing that seems strange to me is that it stops if i shift to neutral while driving. The car recently sat for ...
