Re: V8 Balance Shaft

If I picked up another V8, (which I'm thinking of,) I'd consider pulling the engine to fix everything that needed to be fixed. Of course the valve cover gaskets, and timing cover gaskets, and crank seal. It'd be easier to do the rear main seal, too. Replace all the hoses, too. But would I do the bal...

Re: V8 Balance Shaft

Thanks for sharing this! Mine is leaking a bit again, although I'm not sure where. Bottom of the engine is a little wet at oil change time, but still haven't pinpointed the source. Maybe the bottom firewall side of the timing cover, although that was all clean when I recently did the alternator, and...

Re: Horn Got Disconnected, Now What?

Do you have Vida and a Dice unit? The horn switch is connected to the Central Electronics Module, CEM, and the CEM controls the horn relay. It would be useful to know if the CEM thinks the horn is activated or not. That will help troubleshoot whether it's the input side, or the relay, or something e...

Re: Bad shifting automatic

There's a potentiometer on the back of the throttle that is an input to the transmission computer (TCM); it uses that to help decide when to shift. When mine went bad it caused all sorts of weird shifting. If you take it off and turn it by hand, mine felt "crunchy". In reality, the coils on the wind...

Re: V8 Alternator

It's done, and it's working so we are happy. :) All in, it took 10-11 hours. It should have been a few hours less. Taking it out was 4 hours the first day, and about an hour the second. The first day I got everything moved except the alternator - jacked the car up, disassembled the strut, disassembl...

Re: Back in the Volvo saddle again - and an AC question

We need to know more details about it not working. Over time, the clutch can wear, allowing the gap to increase. When everything is moderate temperatures, say on the first start of the day, the clutch will typically pull in and work fine. But when it gets very hot, (like when its >100°F out and the ...

Re: Why do you (still) drive a P80?

I still drive a P80 for a number of reasons. 1. I like how it drives! 2. I fit in the seats, and they support my back in the right places. 3. I can maintain it, and it hasn't given me any curve balls I couldn't handle. 4. Keeping it maintained and basically stock, it's reliable, even at >300k miles....

Re: V8 Alternator

New style alternators if dealer replaces have the snorkel cooling vent on them (see link- https://goo.gl/photos/sgUfDcBgnQY7ETK58 ,photos do not include the heat resistant wrap over the duct). I've never seen one "live" in an XC90 before but that's what I'm told gets put in. I was never able to get...

Re: VIDA DICE scan query Topic is solved

One note that may be helpful: All of the modules that are working are on the High Speed CAN bus, and the ones that are not working are on the low speed CAN bus. The DiCE can communicate with both, through the CEM. (DiCE has wires that go to each bus.) Thus, something is suspect on the bus, or one of...

Re: Water leak 2010 XC90 Topic is solved

I had to do the same clean-and-seal in my V70, with good results.
