Re: Volvo wouldn't start this morning. Still coughing on start.
Thanks for the great responses. I am going to first try and jumper the fuel relay although I think I hear the pump come in position 2. If that doesn't do the trick I'll start checking the other boxes. Is the fuel filter a big job? Are these symptoms typical of a failing fuel pump? Or does a fuel pum...

Volvo wouldn't start this morning. Still coughing on start.
Hey guys! My 1998 Volvo V70 was sitting in the driveway for about three days and this morning didn't want to start. I gave it about three tries before I began to diagnose. I inspected distributor, wires, tried to start with MAF sensor unplugged and re-seated the fuel pump relay. After doing all of t...

Re: 1998 V70XC RPM drop w/thump sound at 50-65mph
I had the fluid drained and refilled about 8 months ago. Before that, I don't know (I have owned the car for just over two years). The fluid is mildy dirty and not the clear pink that it should be.

1998 V70XC RPM drop w/thump sound at 50-65mph
Hi All, I debated whether or not to post this because I want to be specific as possible. Scenario: driving 50-65 mph on level freeway. Hit the gas to accelerate and the RPMs begin to increase ~300-500 rpm and then drop back down ~300-500 with a *thump* sound and then the car begins to accelerate. On...

Re: 1998 V70XC Stalling (misfiring) while accelerating MVSOL
... When I disconnected the hose from the PTC nipple it was completely gunked up. I cleaned it out the best that I could with a small screwdriver without removing. In retrospect I should have removed. How long will this take to do? What should I clean it out with? ... This is why I asked about the ...

Re: 1998 V70XC Stalling (misfiring) while accelerating MVSOL
(1) When you say "the hose on the PTC nipple" do you mean the small diameter hose, that hooks onto the side of the PTC? That hose you really should just replace any time you service the PCV. The other end of it hooks to a small metal nipple on the passenger side end of the intake manifold...

Re: 1998 V70XC Stalling (misfiring) while accelerating MVSOL
Just as a follow up, I completed the PCV job on Friday afternoon using the kit from FCP. The project went pretty well (~5 hours). The wobble socket extension set certainly helped. No more smoking dipstick and there is suction being created when a latex glove was placed over the oil filler. Also not ...

Re: 1998 V70XC Stalling (misfiring) while accelerating MVSOL
When I watched the FCP DIY video I got nervous when he started in on the intake manifold. I did the radiator a year ago.... Can't be any worse than that....

Re: 1998 V70XC Stalling (misfiring) while accelerating SOLVE
Nice work. Good call on the PCV, you are on your way to having this cleared up for good. In the meantime you can leave the dipstick just the smallest bit ajar to allow crankcase fumes to escape there instead of pushing on the cam seals. If you pull it too far you will get oil all over the engine, I...

Re: 1998 V70XC Stalling (misfiring) while accelerating
... The next day they began troubleshooting; compressions, checked wires, spark plugs, nothing was immediately obvious. Later they informed me that when they pulled the distributor they found an excessive amount of oil and water inside with obvious signs of arcing. They replaced distributor and rot...
