Re: There are only crickets in here...

Thanks for finding all this cool stuff. Chevrolet motors still use push rods and rocker arms to drive the valves. One of the hot rodding tricks is to change the rocker arm ratio for more valve lift. When you have more lift, you need stronger valve springs. And maybe double springs per valve. All to ...

WOW! He really did remanufacture that car.

Check out the photos of the valve train with the valve cover off. The rocker arm has maybe 2:1 ratio so valve opens twice the cam lift.

My advice is install the XeMODeX now and ship the failed ETM back. You get the core credit and should have trouble free operation (and the slight improvements) for a long time.
I think the XeMODeX failure was a fluke.

What is the state of maintenance on the car? Fuel filter, air filter, coils and plugs replaced? Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) cleaned? IS the Check Engine Light (CEL) on? Have you read the OBD codes?

The coil can overheat from it's own internal electrical resistance. Re: 1991 Volvo 240 Stalls Slowly & Dies In Hot Weather

Ignition coils can overheat and slowly kill the engine. They are more likely to fail when it is hot and they are old. The internal insulation breaks down. You could check the resistance, but it may read fine until it gets hot. A Volvo original is best, but a suitable 12 volt generic should work. vol...

These 240 Volvos are very durable, but will have quirky failures as parts wear. Check the bushings in the shifter linkage from the bottom side. They can get sloppy and may cause this problem.

If you used a soft hose not rated for about 1500 PSI, then I am not surprised you had a problem. A soft, low pressure hose would expand or even work loose at the connections. The hose should look like a brake hose at the wheels. Sorry I do not have specific information.

The primer was zinc rich about 8 mil thick. Automotive paint systems are generally about 2 to 3 mils total. The equipme...

It is interesting that all cylinders are the same for all compression tests. You would expect some variation in condition.

I think there is an aluminum filled JB Weld product. Follow all the instructions including cure time before drill and tapping. This should (?) work. Use about half bolt torque when you get to that step.

Any of these can be leaky and you will have low compression instead of no compression. You are also likely to have varied low compression on the cylinders. To get compression readi...

Most two stroke engines that make any serious horsepower use a tuned exhaust. They have an expansion chamber of the shape seen in both car photos. Think of two stroke motorcycle exhausts you have seen (or google dirt bike).

It sounds to me that you never had the coolant properly filled and had an air pocket. When you drained it to start over, you got a partial fill amount. I am not sure of the proper fill method, but I usually fill slowly and squeeze the upper radiator hose many times to work the air out of the system....

Volvo water pumps (like all water pumps I know) are centrifugal pumps. The faster they turn the more flow they make. With normal restrictions in the system, they will make more pressure at higher speed. Sooner or later, the weak point will leak at full engine speed.

Re: 1998 V70 NA M56 Crank No-start - Abscate calling in the Calvary! Topic is solved

Time to go old school. Pull No. 1 plug and turn crank to get top dead center. Pressure (or vacuum) the cylinder to confirm all valves are closed (ignition cycle position). Confirm the distributor is pointing to the No. 1 plug.

absacate is a wannabe with only a stable. Real Volvo owners have a full fleet. Of course, his stable mostly runs.

Re: 850 Hydraulic clutch Issue Topic is solved

Any rubber part can over time become hard and cracked. It may be that the slave cylinder at the clutch had been on the store shelf for years and went bad. Did the box or package for the slave cylinder look old? Did it have any dates on the package or the part? I would return it for refund of your in...

I can relate to some of what you are going through. Caregiving is very hard, especially for someone you love. I suggest you try to do some simple things together she will enjoy. Perhaps a favorite meal or music. I keep seeing your new posts wit new vehicle problems, but most of them I don't have inf...

The photo problem was on my side. I had blocked the image.

The nipple is the block coolant drain.

See this post for comments on plugs: https://www.myvolvoparts.com/Genuine-Volvo-Spark-Plugs-Why-use-genuine-Volvo_b_40.html Not on MVS, but seems reasonable advice to me. You can regap plugs by tapping gently on the bottom of the side electrode. Measure the gap with wire gauge - not flat gauge. The ...

Re: breather box insights ( Banjo bolt type) (lengthy)

I secure the banjo bolt and two crush washers onto the pipe by using an old oring to hold it on Do this before you install the PCV pipe Once the threads have started, I pull the oring with a pick and cut it off This is a great idea! I wish I had done this in May when I did the PCV on mine. Related ...

Re: 850 Hydraulic clutch Issue Topic is solved

The clutch system will not have a pump to assist the operation. Only foot pressure on the pedal is used to operate the cylinder at the clutch. The engine does not need to be running for the hydraulic clutch to operate. If the clutch operates at all, then the hose connection should be correct. Did yo...

Check your vacuum hoses. Unless they have been replaced (which I doubt because your car sounds to have had little maintenance the last years), I suspect they need replacement. May as well stock up on vacuum hose when you get fuel hose. Be sure to get fuel hose rated for high pressure injector system...

Mercedes has had the release latch to tilt the hood up to vertical since the 80's. It was almost a necessity with the Mercedes grill attached to the hood. It is a very useful feature for working under the hood.
