My Little Bit of Garage Heaven

For the last 15 years, I have had no garage and no driveway. Before that, I had a six-car driveway and a tiny, tiny garage. I'm an old retired guy on a modest income about to close on a house near my two grandchildren AND it has an OVERSIZED 2-car garage with a 20-foot-long WORKBENCH and overhead st...

Power seat stuck all the way back...1993 940 wagon

Hi, I've owned this 93 940 wagon for years in this condition, have done some research on the mechanism and wiring and understand that these seats were a failed NASA project that Volvo somehow got hold of. However... With the seat stuck ALL the way to the rear, I can't get at the floor bolts to get t...

Re: Does the coolant lubricate the water pump?

Curious if the coolant lubricates the water pump on these cars? I had an incident where I was low on coolant, so I fixed the issue, refilled the coolant, and there was a horrible screeching sound for about 20 seconds that gradually went away. Eric I just installed an Aisin (?) (volvo) water pump. I...

It’s been a while since I did one, but I remember undoing the motor mount on that end of the engine, supporting it with a hook, and using a ratchet strap to pull it toward the driver’s side. There's a photo credited to erikv11 for this AC clutch fix showing a part number 02AUG2012. Is this a Volvo number or something aftermarket? AC Cuts out after about 15 minutes....

I have read a number of AC threads over the years, and I suspect my compressor clutch needs to be adjust (or maybe needs to have some pieces of zip tie inserted). I haven't yet had an opportunity to stop and check it when it starts blowing uncooled. When first started, the system gets nice and cold,...

Here's very minor tip from someone who has for decades been using zip ties or Ty-Wraps or cable ties both for what they are intended to do and for the million other uses they are excellent for: Get yourself a set of FLUSH CUT diagonal cutters. Seems unusual for a Volvo even in the Northern Northeast. My guess would be that there was, indeed, damage that allowed water and salt to get in but not necessarily drain out. Yes, in both auto and manual configuration. To use the low rpm torque of the turbo better. The NA would require a lot more shifting with the same gearing. Broken mount was a genuine Volvo part. The previous chunk of engine mount was not OEM. So, with about 168k miles, i...

Re: Windshield wiper recommendation for 2000 S70?

It is imperative that you only use OEM Volvo wipers on these cars. Other wipers will just fail on you, and then you will have to go out and buy Volvo wipers, anyway. It is false economy to use non-OEM Volvo wipers. Do it right the first time. I'm only kidding. It's amazing how much difference there ...

Or...What did you screw up on your Volvo recently? So, this week I solved the Evaporative Emissions code I've been half-heartedly messing around with for a year. Replaced hose from purge valve to canister in front fender a long time back with cheap vinyl hose I had on hand. Bad decision. Hose held u...

Shout out for FCP

I ordered an engine mount from FCP Euro in Groton, CT yesterday at about 11:00 am, and it turned up at my door about 27 hours later using the free shipping option for a $63 order. Granted I am probably less than 200 miles away, but that is pretty rapid.

Odd exhaust noise/vibration? Front engine mount.

My odd exhaust noise/vibration seems to have been the front engine mount down near the harmonic balancer. Waiting for part to arrive. Will update. Just posting this to turn up in future searches if someone has this problem.

The shut off valve isn’t there for Evap function, it’s for testing. Eddystone - not rambling at all. Thanks. Bad steel is an interesting thought - I think they were a moderate price option from ipd or FCP. It could be that's a rust spot from sitting in the snow, I don't know - it's the only one on 4 sides. But for a bit, I wondered if I had an out-of-round rotor. M...

As far as removing the Volvo "retention groove" an oscillating saw takes care of both sides in about 30 seconds, and very cleanly.

The $19.95 Harbor Freight tool is not a Fein, but it does the job. I've owned both.

Don't rule out a bad rotor. That spot on the rotor looks very much to me like what I got on a car with very cheap Chinese rotors some years ago. The problem was with the steel that the rotor were made of not being "pure" and uniform all the way through. The results were hard spots that did not wear ...

Only partly familiar with the rear suspension and only with FWD (not AWD) cars, but there is a sort of ball joint where the delta link connects the horizontal arm to the body of the car. For me this code came on in my 99’ s70 GLT and it ended up being an emission system hose, about a half an inch in diameter that runs between the exhaust (header?) and the engine, it was literally falling apart. It was split down the entire run of the hose. ...

Right front suspension, except that you say you hear when the car is not moving. Aside from a relay or the blower motor, what could it be? Your sound system? Some alarm that's dying? Probably some relay chattering-buzzing-vibrating.

That's also the sound the passenger side airbag makes just before it explodes (joke).

I suspect we are talking about more than one standard for octane, here. If you want to buy something called "98 octane" in the USA, you're buying aviation or racing fuel. Re: T5 T5 1999 S70 T5 O2 Sensor errors. Need advice Topic is solved

Replaced the downstream O2 sensor, and the car seems to run better (a bit more responsive and idles a little smoother).

Waiting to see if the CEL comes back due to some other reason...

Pick-N-Pulls NJ, PA, MD, DE, VA

The inventory of a local PnP near me in Philadelphia seems to no longer be holding onto P80s. I have a 98 non-turbo V70 and a 99 T5 S70. Anyone know of any Pic-N-Pull-type places in the NJ, PA, MD, DE, VA area with a decent stock of P80s? I'd like to get a perfect black LF fender for my 1999, but ot...

OLD Headlights: What to do with them?

Here we go... I replaced the headlights on both of my P80s with good quality aftermarket parts that have dramatically improved the light output. Now, I have two sets of OEM headlights with bad, grayed-out reflectors that I can't bear to throw in the trash. Certainly, the glass is worth saving. What ...

1999 S70 T5 O2 Sensor Replacement 2.3 liter plug location

This is just a note in case anyone does a search on this topic. I replaced my downstream O2 sensor today. There are a number of things about the T5 2.3L engine that differ from the other engines, or at least from the non-turbo 1998 2.4L in my other car. The location of the electrical connection for ...

Re: Volvo S70 T5 automatic gearbox

Hey, My 850 t5 has the same symptoms. Works fine but has no "gears" after about 1minute of driving. If I turn the engine off and let it stand for a few minutes it works again. I dont believe its the oil temperature because its minus 10 centigrade right now. Nothing heats up that fast. I found sever...

Re: T5 T5 1999 S70 T5 O2 Sensor errors. Need advice Topic is solved

You will need a good tool to remove an original OXS, they get rusted in pretty good. The three types of tool are Split socket to allow the wire in Dedicated split tool Crows foot type socket allowing more torque access Start hitting it with PB a week before removal, if you can let the car sit durin...

Re: T5 T5 1999 S70 T5 O2 Sensor errors. Need advice Topic is solved

The connectors for both O2 sensors are usually close to the firewall on a bracket held at the rear of the transmission amongst the jungle of ABS lines. They are best sprayed with WD40 as they are often held together by grit and the release on them needs to slide easily. I haven't tried a cut splice...

T5 T5 1999 S70 T5 O2 Sensor errors. Need advice Topic is solved

My code reader says: P0036 HO2S Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 2) P0136 HO2S Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2) I posted this a while back but really need to fix it, now. I can try cleaning the plugs, if I can located them. The ones I have found are under the intake manifold, and th...

Re: Press for replacing upper torque mount

When I looked for a top torque mount for my 1998, it turned out to be completely different from the one on my 1999. Only option I know of for the 1998 is pressing in a new bushing. For the 1999, the Hutchinson is the way to go. I haven't looked into this closely, but it seems as if the huge bench vi...

Thanks, but it was the MAF sensor. I had fuel pressure.

I appreciate the post. though. ;-)

Re: pitted brake disc

Only used when car is parked so I think it does not matter on shoe however, you look to be be in need of springs and star nut adjuster. While in there might as well replace both cables also. That's an awful lot of work, disassembly, reassembly and adjusting to say nothing of the expense if your cab...

Re: pitted brake disc

Brake rotors might "groove" (Ah, the 70's...) from bad quality pads, but they wouldn't cause pitting. That's just very bad steel making up the rotors. Poorly made rotors show pitting (voids) and hard spots where the rotor doesn't wear evenly and grooves the pad. Re upscale brake pads or "competition...

Re: Can someone identify this hose or send the proper diagram?

I just did the PVC system on my 99 T5, and one of those hoses was COMPLETELY deteriorated and split. They hide under the intake manifold along with a number of other critical bits. I replaced mine with hose from the local shop rated for contact with fuel and oil. I also replaced most of the protecti...

Re: MAF Sensor on 1998 V70 non-turbo BAD?

Follow-up: Ordered a Bosch MAF sensor from Amazon. I have a Prime account and paid an additional $3.99 for next day shipping. Believe it or not, it showed up the next morning via UPS at 10:30 am. That's hard to beat. The sensor appears to be Bosch. It's in a Bosch box. What more can I know regarding...

Re: MAF Sensor on 1998 V70 non-turbo BAD?

Make sure that it have the same Bosch mumbers 0 280 217 107,like old one. Definitely the right part number ordered. My 1999 T5 comes up with a different part number, so it's not one size fits all. Amazing that the "supposedly" same part can be offered for sale on the web ranging from $20 to $348. I...
