Re: V70 automatic transmission

I too can't wait until I figure this one out... Yes I did check that the axles had not popped out from the CV joints. misha, are you recommending that I remove the boot covering the CV joint and do a detailed inspection? I would have thought that applying the brakes and engaging Drive and Reverse wh...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

I have pulled out both LH and RH axles and could not see any problems. No spline damage, not blobs of grease, no broken or disconnected axles. The boots etc were replaced about 18 months ago. Carrier bearing on the RH side is fine. Short of an axle breaking there was no way that either axle could po...

Volvo V70 Fault codes

My 1997 Volvo V70 has an OBDII socket mounted in the console between the front seats. I have searched the internet but am getting confused messages as to 1/ How to read the codes and 2/ What the codes mean. Here's what I've done so far. Connected a simple LED Pushbutton arrangement to the following ...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Car is RH drive. Have removed left hand axle and cannot see any damage. The axle was securely seated into the transmission and into the hub.
I will now take a look at the PNP switch.

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Discovered that transmission working again after I fiddled with the LH & RH wheels. Just turned them by hand and decided to give the car a try up and down the driveway. Took car for a test drive on Thursday March 16. LH & RH turns, up and down through gears, hard accelerations and over a few bumps. ...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Let me see if I can make some clearer statements. When the problem reoccurred last night there was no noise. I just drifted around the corner to a stop. Felt like the car was in neutral. When I tried to put shift to Park there was a grinding noise, like gears meshing - this only occurs when moving f...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Thanks 'The Wifes_S70'. Where can I find out just what these parts do? I am still puzzled why when trying to select Park there is a grinding noise and vibration in the drive selector. The noise reminds me of trying to change a manual gearbox without pushing in the clutch. This noise and vibration on...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

I think my Volvo is haunted. I just removed the jacks and did a short (few metres) drive up and down the driveway. All seems to be working ok and no grinding when I put selector to Park. Park also immobilises the car which it didn't before. Apart from a look underneath and fiddling with turning whee...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Ok, here's the latest information. Have checked that the drive selector does move the transmission selector. There is no cable break or loose connections. The drive selector moves the transmission selector over the full range. Here's the current scenario:- 1/ Volvo up on jacks. Engine off. 2/ In Par...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

OK, I've put the Volvo up on stands. When I rotate the RH (driver's) side wheel the LH side wheel rotates in reverse and vice versa for the LH wheel. I assume from this that there is no broken connections through the transaxles. Also took a look underneath and all seems ok. Cannot see any axle out o...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Thank you to all those who have submitted possible answers to my problem. Much appreciated. I will be home this afternoon and will raise the Volvo and take a look at the CV's etc. Would never have thought of looking there. And yes, when I move the drive selector the selector on the transmission does...

Re: V70 automatic transmission

Hey johnhb, sorry to hear about the troubles. Especially after giving your car the service she deserves! How's the transmission fluid? Did you let it get all black and burnt? I've read a lot of posts here and usually drivers point to sporadic issues that become more and more frequent before a trans...

V70 automatic transmission

Driving to church yesterday there was 'clunk' as I rounded the round-about and the Volvo rolled to a stop. Tried putting the drive selector to 1 & 2 but no go. No Reverse also. When I put drive selector into Park there is a short grinding noise but the Park does not lock the transmission. Can these ...

many thanks to all who contributed. They do belong to the timing belt lower cover. I've obviously fitted the cover with standard M7 bolts.

Re: Unknown special bolts

Those bolts look vaguely familiar..... By any chance, do you still need to install the belt guard that goes around the bottom of the crankshaft pulley? It seems to me that those bolts are similar. IIRC the long nose helps get things lined up and the threads started. (Although I still found it a kin...

No, I did not remove the brake caliper. Plenty of room to get to the crankshaft pulley without doing that.

Re: Unknown special bolts

Some of the components you replaced come with bolts, maybe you have these old ones as spares now? Apologies for this after the cows have left the barn , but it really pays to push fasteners through paper, label them, and then store them in a box until needed. I use pizza boxes and then buy a new bo...

P80 lower timing belt cover bolts 974674

After replacing the camshaft seals, upper cylinder block to lower cylinder block seal, timing belt, water pump, tensioner wheel and idler wheel I am left with two unusual bolts. They are M7 hex heads 43 mm long. There is 10mm of thread at the head end of the bolt and the rest is a slightly tapered s...

Thanks, ErikV11
My Volvo has the two bolt type.
Still uncertain as to whether I just replace the bushes or the complete arms. The arm I have removed (RH) has no damage except that the bushes are worn out.

Re: 1998 V70 Wagon Front control arms

Thank you, Ozark Lee. Your advice is much appreciated. Has anyone purchased the control arms from overseas? I am looking at FCP Euro who seem to have reasonable prices. Local Burson store quoted AU$1000 for the pair of control arms. Also does anyone know how I can get the original OE number for thes...

Re: 1998 V70 Wagon Front control arms

Thank you all for your inputs. I had the feeling that the RH control arm should not just drop down but wasn't sure.

By preloading I assume you mean to connect the ball joint and then tighten the bushes.

Re: 1998 V70 Wagon Front control arms

From your reply cufhs - do I assume that the LH control arm is faulty because is springs back up when I push it down whereas the RH control arm is ok because it freely drops downs with no resistance or spring back effect?

1998 V70 Wagon Front control arms

When replacing the driveshaft boots, I discovered that the RH control arm just drops down when I released the ball joint, but the LH control arm has a spring like feel to it and when pushed down it springs back up. The Haynes manual makes no mention as to whether the control arm should have a spring...
