whine from 240 driveshaft(?)

Hi all - 89 240DL wagon, 167k On cold mornings, I get a weird whining noise from what feels like right under the shift level as I back down the driveway, like with each revolution of the driveshaft. By the time I'm in the street (maybe 90 feet), it stops, sometimes with an abrupt click or snap-like ...

front seat, 1997 850 GLT wagon

Thinking about swapping the driver and passenger seat bottoms in 97 850 GLT wagon, as the driver's foam and leather covering is showing its age (and passenger's looks almost new (just did the same thing with 89 240 wagon and notice big improvement)). The 850 driver's seat is motorized, but not the p...

Fyi for getting out broken lug bolts. Aside from obvious cautions about flames around the car, keep in mind about heating up the wheel and anything else nearby in the process. Although have used "easy-out" extractors in the past, found that when the heads break off, the load is gone from t...

850 tires

Echo "you get what you pay for" - bought my 97 GLT s/w from Chevy dealer (!) in tough shape, but they had new "nankang" tires on it. Looked nice, but found high-frequency vibration above 70 mph. Thought it was just natural or road surface, until put snows on same wheels and no vi...

wheel stuck; 98 v70

Although the pounding seems to have worked, it's not something you really want to do on a tire or wheel (especially when car on jack). A reliable and safer trick is to break the nuts loose as usual, back out a turn or 2. Before raising car, roll it a foot or so and back - car weight will break the b...

fitting wheel center caps, 1997 850 s/w

97 850 GLT wagon, 100k miles - just bought new "antlia" wheels but found that center caps don't fit over front axle spindle ends. Dealer says axle ends may be after-market from previous owner (e.g. have also seen NAPA alternator on car so probably true). Anyway, seems that older caps from ...

tailgate rattle, 97 850 GLT wagon

Having got much good advice on this and other topics, thought I'd share this weekend's tailgate experience. Trying to be scientific, pulled one piece of trim at a time and test drove car to isolate rattle. By mid afternoon Sunday, was driving around with no tailgate interior, high brake light, D-pil...

jacking 97 850 wagon

Where on the frame or subframe is it OK to lift the front or rear of an 850 wagon? What also about location of jack stands?

Thanks,

Ob

Thanks Luketrash -

Don't think I tossed a weight, but tires are news to me - "Nankang." Seem alright, although I indeed found what looks like a blem inside tread while checking for air leak (turned out to be valve(s)). Balancing should presumably correct for that, right?

As always, thanks to all. Have seen various wheels as described, but am just looking for the 6-spokers (believe ones on the car = "cetus"). While on the subject, just returned from longish-haul road trip (~250 each way) and although ride was great, am wondering about sort of ryhthmic high-...
