Re: 1996 850 Wagon Service Light On Topic is solved

Measured the draw with an ammeter and got .05 A on connection then dropped
to .019 after a short bit of time, or 19 mA. Seems low enough to me.
Alternator is putting out 14.0 V.
We took back the 5 yr Walmart battery and got a new one for free.

Re: 1996 850 Wagon Service Light On Topic is solved

We changed the Voltage Regulator/brush assembly with a Transpro brand part from ebay about a month ago. He uses the car daily and it has been working fine even through some single digit temps. Then, yesterday, he drove home from work fine got up and it would not crank no power. AAA came and the car ...

Re: Replace Voltage Regulator Without Removing Alternator

I ordered brushes and also bought this one on ebay, that doesn't show any brand. It arrived and came in a Transpro box and also says Transpro on the part. Here is a bit about the US based company or maybe just a US distributor: http://www.waiglobal.com/transpoelectronics I was pleased to see that i...

I found a loose hose when working on the alternator that I must have
knocked off when changing the radiator. All is well now!

Re: Replace Voltage Regulator Without Removing Alternator

The two that list an OEM bosch number both list 1 127 014 028 that Chuck W provided so I'm going to order that one, probably from Amazon for $7.43: https://www.amazon.com/BOSCH-Alternator-Carbon-Brush-1127014028-x/dp/B003NE3EJO When I tried to order these brushes on Amazon the shipping time was ver...

Re: Replace Voltage Regulator Without Removing Alternator

I'm trying to confirm that Bosch number for the #1 197 311 520 regulator and when I google that brush number I came across this Bosch web page where you can look up "usage in products": https://www.bosch-automotive-catalog.com/en_GB/product-detail/-/product/1127014028 There's a long list of voltage ...

Re: Replace Voltage Regulator Without Removing Alternator

That is very cool but I used what I had and it was also easy.
Even at 30 deg F out - wear long underwear.
I didn't even remove the dipstick tube.

Re: Replace Voltage Regulator Without Removing Alternator

Some say that they can't imagine doing this in the car. You can use a stubby
Phillips screw driver, but this makes all but the rear most cover screw easy:
