1996 850R AC cycling causes noticeable jolt
I finally ended up switching my 850R's AC on this weekend, for the first time since I bought the car nearly a year ago. To my surprise, it blows ice cold, but at steady highway speeds, there is a slight, but noticeable jolt every 20 seconds or so as the compressor cycles on and off. I gather that th...

Re: 1997 850 Sudden Loud Squeal from Brakes
If the squeal happens whenever the car is moving, rather than only when you apply the brakes, a stone stuck in the heat shield is a very likely cause. I've had it happen to me once or twice. It's an easy enough fix -- jack the car up and remove the wheel that the noise is coming from. The heat shiel...

Re: V/S 70s -- Thoughts on Preventive Maintenance -- Brakes
I'd agree. I can't imagine that mileage would have much impact on brake hose integrity, but I've owned a long string of 15+ year old cars, and on every one of them, the brake hoses had either already been replaced, or desperately needed it, regardless of mileage. My 850R actually had one of the fron...

Re: '96 850R - smoke at startup, PCV test and turbo question
Thanks. There's no doubt that there's oil being burned somewhere, but it's just a question of where it's coming from. I had a friend follow me today and they did see a small amount of smoke at high vacuum and after pulling away from a stop, just not enough that I could see it in the mirror. Sounds l...

'96 850R - smoke at startup, PCV test and turbo questions
I have just noticed that when I start my 850R from cold, there is a sizeable cloud of blue smoke from the exhaust as I pull away -- big enough to spot in the rear view mirror. My initial thought was valve stem seals, but I've never noticed any smoke after idling in traffic or when coasting on a clos...

Re: 1996, 850 Turbo, No Start
My 850R had an issue like that when I bought it. Most of the time, it would start and run just fine with no symptoms at all, but every so often it would refuse to start, even after sitting for just a few minutes. Sometimes it would start successfully an hour or so later, but other times, it would go...

Re: 1996 850 What are the plastic roof trim pieces called?
From my (rather limited) experience, the roof moldings on the S/V70 seem to hold up better than the ones on the 850 - the coating seems to be some kind of rubbery material rather than the plastic on the 850. Most of the S/V70s that I've seen in junkyards have had decent-looking roof moldings, and th...

That doesn't look like the factory-fitted alarm system – the fobs and alarm horn look different, and the factory system doesn't have the switch by the hood release, or the pin that you mentioned. The alarm horn nut mentioned is probably not relevant in your case. The 'sensor' is the unused connector...

'96 850R: Torque converter whine: anything to worry about?
My automatic '96 850R has been making a faint whining noise when idling in gear when the transmission is warm. It seems to go away (or at least be drowned out by engine and road noise) when moving, and is not evident in Park or Neutral. It's too quiet to record successfully, but a brief stall test s...

Re: (all years) - Removing floorboard foam
I did the same thing a little while ago – just cut the foam out and taped up the edges when I put it back in. If you're looking to remove the ducts just so that you can get the foam out, it is possible (although a real pain) to get the foam out with the ducts in place, if you cut high up on the tran...
