Re: Timing Belt Change - Aftermath

Those timing belt bits are stuffed in there like Subaru's sparkplugs. I never understand why Volvo didn't move the engine just 1 more inch away from the passenger fender to give more working room. Heck even half an inch would have made it so much easier.

Clutch switch. I can start my 95/94 with the clutch fully engaged. So no need to push the clutch to start. Three things needed to fire an engine, air, fuel, and spark. Re: Thinking Outside The Usual Box...

I'm a dirty boy and I use URO coolant lines. I've also used cheap shocks and struts. Gasp. But my car was until recently used exclusively for delivery. So every penny counted. But I've put over 70,000 miles on my URO coolant hoses without an issue. Now that I think about it, it's probably about time...

You know what worked really well for me? Guitar picks. You use a flathead screwdriver to open a space under the rubber part that applies pressure, add a dab of super glue to the side of the guitar pick that connects to the rubber piece, slide in, remove screw driver, and repeat. I've done it on two ...

You don't need an engine lift to do the ps rack. I just did mine over the winter. You can use your jack and a few extra jack stands to support the engine from underneath. The up to 98 (before the ETM came) are quite trouble free. Even after that they were not bad compared to say an Audi. There are way more troublesome cars to tinker around with. Up to 95 the 850ies had the OBD 1 blinky box which enabled you to diagnose car problems without an OBD reader. Plus, the 9...

Help Me Figure Out This Tire Wear

Long story short. I run 195/65/15's on my Volvo. I keep getting weird wear patterns on my tires. Presently the front tires look under inflated. But I run them at a constant 36 psi. 42 in the rear. Suspension and steering is all brand new within the last year. It's been alinged twice in the last year...

Very interesting thread! I'll weigh in here. My NA '96 wagon (manual) averaged 24-26 mpg city, and 32-34 highway. My current '95 NA sedan (manual) does 21 mpg city and 26 highway. All day and night with no variations what-so-ever. Both were stage 0, well maintained etc. The '96 had a motronic ecu se...

Leaking Valve Stem Seals, Need Help Making A Decision. '95 Base Manual

I was working on Herman (link in Signature) this last week, and found that the #5 cylinder's exhaust valve stem seal is leaking. Just looking at my options here. I'm sure there are things I haven't considered. Herman is a '95 base (non turbo) manual with 245,000 miles. I've rebuilt or replaced almos...

Option 2: gainfully employed ...

Unless there are any other signs pointing to a bad head gasket, I'd suggest it is just old car issues. You obviously work your car hard and at it's age it is complaining. The header tanks are a known issue with age of the cars so would not necessarily mean a bad head gasket. Could have got dinged w...

DIY $1, 15 min. Glovebox Repair Write up

Hello fellow Volvo enthusiasts! If you drive an 850, odds are at some point your glove box latch is going to fail. Picked up a bunch of parts from a really great Volvo tech on Friday. In the lot of parts was an Alpine 6 disc cd changer. Reminds me of my dad's old 3-series and my mom's old discovery. Figure I'll install it in the trunk to keep it period correct. Now to only find six CDs to play. :D

Just don't be picking any cars in East St Louis. I drove through their once and it made worst part of NY look safe. I hope it got better. If by better you mean more overgrown with vegetation and more difficult to see from the highway, then yes! Sadly most of our salvage yards are on the "east side"...

Re: Herman and Operation 30MPG

Quick update. Went north to visit my in-laws. Herman returned 26mpg on this trip, which is strange. Temp was about 70 F.
