Thank you both for the input. Is prop shaft the same as the drive shaft? One mechanic I know says he will pull the driveshaft if I sign a waiver. He estimates its a two-hour job. If he pulls the shaft and I still have the racket, it sounds like the operation is reversible?

I turned my 2000 V70XC into FWD when I had that problem. I live half the year in a place that gets a lot of snow, and I was still surprised at how superbly the XC handled on snow and ice with only FWD.
