If anyone else is ever trying to figure out why their early to mid 1980s 240 has a strong odor of gasoline inside the car after running out of gas, here's what I figured out.

Did you overfill the fuel tank (fill until fuel reached the filler cap)?

3. Gas can had puny spout. I tried to get it to work but gas was just going on road. Friend had very long necked funnel and jammed that in. It worked. But one of us may have dislodged or broken the filler tube or something else.
